THW deployment in Gohrischheide: Hundreds of helpers active against forest fire!
A tense and calm situation has developed in Gohrischheide since Tuesday afternoon. The deployment of the Technical Relief Agency (THW) has already lasted for several days, with around 200 volunteers from 19 local associations taking part in the extinguishing work. How MDR reported that the emergency services are mastering the challenge in shifts, with some having already been replaced in order to ensure constant operational readiness. They also take care of setting up water transfer points and all water and tank logistics.
The importance of water in vegetation firefighting could not be higher. The THW transports water to the sources of the fire and ensures that the collecting basins are always full. The THW's rescue diving specialist group, which is known for its special underwater operations, will soon be called upon to provide support in order to ensure the extraction of water for fire-fighting helicopters. According to Ralf Hänsel, the district administrator of the Meißen district, the community is obliged to ensure fire fighting.
Stable situation in the region
The fire situation in Gohrischheide is assessed as stable. A cool night ensured that the flame fronts near the Bundeswehr material storage facility in Zeithain and the town of Nieska were successfully stopped. Despite this positive news, the discussion about a possible increase in capacity for forest fire engines remains ongoing, although Hänsel currently sees no urgency.
A challenge that does not only affect the region is the increase in extreme weather events as a result of climate change. How DGUV reports, the number of forest fires has exploded in recent years. In 2023, the forest area burned exceeded the long-term average by more than 40 percent. The increasing vegetation fires not only pose an increased risk to emergency services, but also a number of health risks, as numerous carcinogenic substances have been identified.
Futuristic solutions in fire protection strategy
Discussion about purchasing armored vehicles to provide support in contaminated areas is also ongoing. These could be useful not only in fire areas, but also in other operations, such as support from the rescue diving specialist group. This group is equipped with special vehicles and has the know-how to carry out urgently necessary work underwater, be it recovering material goods or securing systems.
The unclear question of costs for fire protection and operations in Gohrischheide also remains open. But one thing is certain: the demands on the operations and the emergency services are increasing, and with them the need to ensure an improved fire-fighting water supply. In the upcoming main study, which is due to take place in the next few months, particular attention will be paid to the exposure of firefighters and the development of new prevention concepts. Preparation for future missions becomes the most important task that will accompany the THW and other organizations on this challenging path.
