Outdoor swimming pool in Zörbig: Opening postponed to 2026 – construction problems eliminated!
The outdoor pool season in Zörbig fell through this year - and several times. As Mayor Matthias Egert (CDU) explained in a Facebook video, the new city pool will no longer open in 2025. The opening, originally planned for June 28th, 2025, was initially postponed to August 1st due to construction delays and finally moved to Pentecost 2026. daily news reports that despite existing construction progress, the old filter systems are badly damaged and major renovation work is urgently needed.
An open day at the construction site, which was announced in September, is intended to give residents an insight into the ongoing work. The city has invested almost four million euros in the renovation of the outdoor pool, which also includes the installation of a new stainless steel pool and a slide, like the one Central German newspaper supplemented.
Challenges in outdoor pool renovations
The renovation of municipal outdoor swimming pools is a hotly debated topic throughout Germany. A contribution from Boltwise shows that many operators are reaching their financial limits, while urgent renovation work often cannot be carried out. A third of pool operators are planning comprehensive renovations within the next five years, which represents an increase compared to previous years. Nevertheless, financial resources are insufficient to cover actual needs.
Although the federal government has pledged one billion euros for the modernization of sports facilities, critics agree: That may not be enough to resolve the investment backlog that has arisen. Rising construction costs and interest rates are making it even more difficult for municipalities to maintain their pools. And while the opening of the outdoor pool in Zörbig becomes more and more distant, the closure of other pools becomes increasingly likely if these challenges are not addressed.
With pools being an important part of the public infrastructure, it is even more important that the necessary financial resources and sustainable support are established to ensure the long-term existence of these facilities. Zörbig and other cities are faced with the task of not only renovating an outdoor swimming pool, but also investing in a healthy future - for the community and its need for recreation and leisure.
