Trouble over the makeshift stop in Eckartsberg: Parents worried!

In tranquil Eckartsberg, there is a concern among residents that is connected to the situation surrounding the new makeshift stop on Löbauer Straße. The road, which is an important connection to Zittau and the surrounding area, will remain closed until next Sunday. From Monday, traffic will flow again on one side under traffic light control, which should bring relief for commuters. However, the new use is anything but worry-free for the possibly increased traffic in the region.

Work on the Forge Bridge will last until July 2026 and during this time alternative public transport solutions had to be found. Temporary bus stops were set up, including in front of the Büchner car dealerships. However, parents are concerned about the safety of their children who have to wait for the bus to school at these makeshift stops. District spokesman Kevin Schlei explained that these locations were chosen due to a lack of alternatives and that the aim was to give passengers a shorter route without a sidewalk.

Accident history is cause for concern

The makeshift stop was located at the exact location where a tragic accident occurred in September 2024 in which a passenger lost her life. There was another fatal accident at the same location four years earlier. These tragic incidents have significantly raised the parents' worry barometer. Schlei pointed out that bus line 10 only runs via Löbauer Straße, which further complicates the decision for the temporary stop. Suggestions from parents to remove the temporary stop failed because a regular stop nearby would not be ideal for the students.

Current statistics show that traffic accidents are not just a local problem. Comprehensive studies of the traffic safety situation provide data that is important for legislation and traffic education. According to Destatis, these statistics are an excellent basis for developing measures to improve road safety.

Road safety in focus

Restrictions on speed limits are also part of the discussion: a maximum speed of 50 km/h applies in the affected area. You don't want to think about future measures and possible speed adjustments until after the construction work has been completed. It remains to be seen whether these steps can really improve the long-term safety of passengers, especially children.

The developments surrounding the makeshift stop and the associated safety concerns show how important it is to find solutions that are not only short-term, but also sustainable. Dialogue between the authorities and the population is crucial to regain trust and avoid tragic incidents in the future.
