Railway chaos between Zittau and Ebersbach: This is how the SEV works!
Something is happening in cross-border rail traffic between Zittau and Ebersbach: the line has been at a standstill since the end of July, and there is a good reason for that. A bridge in Mittelherwigsdorf is considered to be in danger of collapsing, which led to the establishment of a rail replacement service (SEV). Around 20 passengers are waiting at the bus platform at the train station for the DB Regio Ost articulated bus, which will leave at 10:36 a.m. and start its journey three minutes late. Well-equipped with spacious luggage racks and USB ports, the bus takes travelers safely to their destination.
Anyone who relies on Trilex rail transport will also be disappointed. The railway has stopped traffic between Ebersbach and Zittau, which means that the L7 line (Seifhennersdorf-Zittau-Liberec) is completely eliminated for the time being. If you want to get from Dresden to Zittau, you have to change and go via Görlitz, where trains are available every hour. But this journey takes a long time: instead of an hour, it now takes over two hours and 32 minutes. “That doesn’t make the whole thing any easier,” murmurs a traveler at the bus station while waiting for the SEV, as MDR reports.
Construction site on the B96
The situation is further exacerbated by the closure of federal highway 96 between Mittelherwigsdorf and Oderwitz due to necessary construction work. Here, the bypass is no easier task for drivers, which causes additional dissatisfaction. Residents and commuters realize that the region's transport network urgently needs to be brought up to speed.
The responsible authorities, including the district and the railway, have already initiated discussions to clarify how to proceed. A temporary bridge for pedestrians and cyclists is also planned, which should be built by the end of September or beginning of October. The dismantling of the endangered bridge should be completed by November at the latest. Up to this point it remains unclear when trains will run via Mittelherwigsdorf again, which is unsettling many travelers.
Investments in infrastructure
The tense situation within the transport sector is also reflected in current political efforts. The federal government plans to invest a total of 166 billion euros in infrastructure by 2029, primarily in the renovation of dilapidated railway lines and motorway bridges. Part of this package, around 107 billion euros, will go to rail, which corresponds to an increase of 60 percent compared to the years 2020 to 2024. This shows that the need for action is enormous, as Tagesschau reports.
“We now have to have a good hand in improving the existing infrastructure and making traffic in the region more fluid again,” says Katerina Hagen, press spokeswoman for the Trilex operator. It remains to be seen how quickly and efficiently the measures adopted can be implemented, because a functioning transport network is crucial for everyone who depends on good cooperation.
