Germany will become Ukraine's key partner in defense construction!
Amid current geopolitical tensions and the Ukraine conflict, there are significant changes in military support for Ukraine. The US government has announced that it will restrict military aid to Ukraine and stop specific arms deliveries. This is happening against the background of increased military cooperation between the Federal Government and Ukraine, which has become increasingly clear in recent weeks. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) visited Kiev and was accompanied by representatives of important German defense companies, according to the news platform wsws.org reported.
While the names of the company's CEOs and the details of the arms deals have so far been kept secret, Rheinmetall is considered a leading partner in Ukraine. With its own tank factory in western Ukraine, Rheinmetall has recently massively expanded its activities. The company's CEO, Armin Papperger, visited Kiev several times to strengthen the cooperation. This is also happening against the background that Volkswagen is planning to enter the armaments business and is interested in working with Rheinmetall to convert the plant in Osnabrück.
Armament projects and military support
The cooperation between Germany and Ukraine goes far beyond just arms deals. The German government is planning comprehensive support for the Ukrainian defense industry. Wadephul's delegation has initiated a variety of projects - up to 20 partnerships and joint ventures are planned. Among other things, Germany is supposed to guarantee 16 Iris-T anti-aircraft positions, six of which have already been installed. This is part of a broader strategy to integrate Ukraine as an important partner in defense production, which is seen as a driving factor for further war preparations against Russia.
Rheinmetall plays a central role here by acting as the sole source of supply for large quantities of new medium and large caliber ammunition. The ammunition supplied includes, among other things, 20mm and 35mm bullets as well as 155mm artillery ammunition. Ukraine has already had to receive hundreds of thousands of rounds of this ammunition, and in December 2023 Rheinmetall received the order to supply tens of thousands of rounds for 2025. There are also plans to set up a “Ukrainian Competence Center for Ammunition” in which a six-figure number of 155mm bullets will be produced annually, as shown on rheinmetall.com is to be read.
Context of military buildup
Amid these arms efforts, Ukraine recently received the first of 54 RCH 155 wheeled howitzers, a move that underscores the need to support the Ukrainian defense industry. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasizes the importance of supporting Ukraine in producing its own defense equipment. At the same time, strategic decisions are pending in Germany, while demands for additional aid worth billions from the Greens continue to be discussed. The willingness to cooperate in defense production is viewed not only in Germany, but also in other European NATO states as untapped potential that needs to be leveraged ZDF news report.
Pressure is growing on the German authorities to increase their military presence in Eastern Europe. The Bundeswehr has already stationed a permanent combat brigade in Lithuania, and Norway is also transferring F-35 fighter jets to Poland to reinforce material transport to Ukraine. The military build-up and strategic partnerships between Germany and Ukraine are taking on more and more urgent forms, and this at a time when experts are expecting a war against Russia - the estimates range up to a period of five to eight years, as Inspector General Carsten Breuer predicts.
The situation remains tense and it is clear that both Ukraine and its European partners must prepare for a further course of the conflict, which has not only military, but also economic and social dimensions.
