Finally over! Last case of the African swine plague in the district of Görlitz
In a pleasant progress in the fight against the African swine plague (ASP), the district of Görlitz officially lifted the last confirmed case of the plague on June 30, 2025. This represents an important milestone that has been achieved after almost five years of hard work and intensive measures. The first case of the ASP was reported on October 27, 2020 in Krauschwitz, a district of Pechern. Since then, the region has taken various measures to contain the disease and protect the pork stands, as the weekly courier .
coordinated by the food surveillance and veterinary office, the responsible persons showed great commitment in combating the ASP. Fences were built, falling game searches and comprehensive hygiene measures were coordinated. There were a total of over 1,700 days of operation and more than 5,500 secluded pieces of wild boar. Despite the adversity, around 1,467 ASP-positive wild boars were detected. The main goal of preventing the introduction of the virus into house pig stocks was achieved. From the second half of 2023 a significant decline in new infections was recorded, and since July 2024 there have been no new ASP cases in the Görlitz district.
special challenges and successes
The geographical location of the district of Görlitz, directly on the border with Poland and the Czech Republic, was a special challenge. Cases of the ASP were already known there. While a total of almost 2,400 confirmed ASP cases were registered in wild boar in Saxony, the district of Görlitz was most affected, which had an important impact on agriculture and hunters with almost 1,500 cases. In the past week, eleven active cases were recorded in Saxony, so that the upcoming decision on the cancellation of the last case is evaluated particularly positively, as Blick
The common performance of many actors, including various offices, hunting associations, the farmers' association and a large number of volunteers, was recognized on the occasion of the lifting of the last case. Although this success is celebrated, the ASP remains a serious risk. Not only the geographical proximity to high -risk areas in Poland, but also newly occurred cases in West German federal states make ongoing vigilance essential. In order to keep the ASP under control, preventive measures are planned in the Görlitz district. This includes a reduction in wild boar stocks and the establishment of protective strips. The Free State of Saxony even plans to submit an application to the European Commission to reduce restriction zones in autumn. It is also important to note that eating pork for humans and pets is harmless to health, but the virus for pigs remains a serious threat. The ASP ensures sustainable changes in pig farming and demands intensive hygiene regulations to minimize the risk of spreading, as on agriculture explained . The outlook on the future
