Florian Oest: Politician from Görlitz fights for border controls!

Last week a breath of fresh air came from Berlin: Florian Oest gave his first speech to the Bundestag on June 5th. The 37-year-old, who entered the Bundestag via the CDU state list, gave a passionate lecture on a hotly debated topic - border controls. It was noticeable that the topic was making waves not only locally, but also nationally. The alles-lausitz.de reports that his contribution was followed closely by the MPs in Berlin. By June 11, the recording of his speech had already been accessed 465 times on Facebook and received 45 likes.

Oest, who comes from the border triangle between Poland and the Czech Republic, sees it as an honor to speak for his region. As he explained during the speech, he refrained from citing current figures in order to leave the task of providing them to the media. During this speech he was part of a quartet of speakers, which also included a representative of the CSU. The Görlitz CDU district association congratulated him on his performance and the passion he displayed.

Political commitment and challenges

His political career is already impressive. Born on August 25, 1987 in Görlitz, Oest completed his high school diploma at the Joliot-Curie Gymnasium in 2007. He successfully completed his subsequent law studies at the Technical University of Dresden with a bachelor's and master's degree. In addition to his political career as chairman of the CDU in the Görlitz district and his membership in the state board of the Junge Union Sachsen, he has also gained a lot of professional experience. Among other things, he was a consultant in Saxon state ministries before entering the Bundestag in 2025. You can find out more about this at bundestag.de.

Addressing the controversial border controls in his speech, Oest emphasized the need for a common European solution. This problem is becoming a hotly debated issue that is dividing political camps. While several politicians, such as Mechthilde Wittmann from the CSU, consider permanent controls to be necessary, Irene Mihalic from the Greens warns of the high demands and the associated personnel requirements, which calls into question both efficiency and flexibility. The current debate could soon bring Oest back to the microphone, as zdf.de reports. The temporary controls at the borders with Poland and the Czech Republic have been extended until December 2024.

The opinions are mixed, the fronts are clear. The Polish mayor Rafal Gronicz recently criticized measures that many believe are increasing traffic problems in the border triangle. Amid these controversies, it is important for Oest to build a bridge between his region's interests and national security needs. With his focus on internal security, traffic and research, he will continue to advocate for a solution that takes into account both the concerns of residents and the necessary security precautions.

Florian Oest spoke in Berlin and delved into what it means to represent a region. The road is still rocky, but with his determination and a clear course, he has every chance of winning the trust of his voters and mastering the challenges of his office.
