Driving license prices are exploding: Görlitz students pay up to 4,000 euros!

The costs of acquiring a driving license in Germany are constantly increasing and this is now also having a significant impact on novice drivers in Cologne. Experts report that prices for car driving licenses are now between 2,500 and 4,000 euros. Harry Thiele, an experienced driving instructor from Görlitz, states that costs have continued to grow in recent years due to increasing demands on learner drivers, which is also reflected in: Sächsische.de is confirmed. As a rule, more driving lessons are needed these days for perfect preparation.

A look at the numbers shows that before the corona pandemic, only around 50 percent of learner drivers spent less than 2,500 euros on their driving license. Today, around 45 percent pay between 2,500 and 3,500 euros and around 13 percent even between 3,500 and 4,500 euros. What is particularly noteworthy is that prices in neighboring countries such as Poland and the Czech Republic are significantly lower at just 600 to 900 euros.

Rising prices; always a topic

According to the current figures, the situation is alarming: in 2024, the prices for driving schools and tests rose by 5.8 percent compared to the previous year. This is significantly higher than the increase in consumer prices of just 2.2 percent over the same period. The ADAC reports that driving lessons and special trips make up the majority of the costs and that driving schools can set their own rates here. Transparency is required by law, but driving students would do well to compare the offers in order to find the best price-performance ratio - a request that is also made by ADAC.de is underlined.

The price increase for driving licenses has been significantly higher than general inflation in recent years. In 2022 alone, there was the highest increase of 10.8 percent since statistics began in 1991. The main reasons are often the increased costs for vehicles, diesel and personnel, which makes the situation even more complicated for young drivers. These developments have also brought politics into the spotlight. During the last coalition negotiations between the Union and the SPD, there were urgent calls to reform driving license training and to make it more affordable, especially for people in rural areas like this Tagesschau.de reported.

A look into the future

It remains to be seen how driving license prices will develop over time. A cheap driving license is not just a question of money, but also of accessibility for everyone. Demand remains consistently high – and there is still hope that the financial burdens of new people will be eased. Driving schools are under pressure to offer fairer prices while at the same time complying with legal requirements. It is up to the legislature to keep up.

The situation with driving licenses reflects the current economic situation and shows how many factors can influence the lives of drivers in Germany. Only time will tell whether politicians will take the right steps to improve things.
