Violent attack in Görlitz: Young people injure police officers in attack!

Yesterday evening, August 10, 2025, there was a violent incident at Görlitz train station. Three federal police officers were attacked and injured by two teenagers. The incident sheds light on the challenges facing security forces in the region. How Radiolausitz Reportedly, the attacks resulted in one of the officers being listed as unfit for duty.

At the center of the event were an 18-year-old and a 15-year-old, both from Görlitz. The older of the two juvenile attackers put a police officer in a stranglehold, but the officer was able to defend himself with gas and a baton. After the 18-year-old was handcuffed, he bit another police officer on the forearm. The 15-year-old used a beer bottle to hit another officer in the back of the head, which also caused injuries. Despite the severity of the attack, the teens were released home and not taken into custody. In the event of a court hearing, they could expect lenient sentences as juvenile criminal law applies.

Juvenile crime and police challenges

This incident is not isolated. In Görlitz, the authorities opened a new youth law center at Gobbinstrasse 5, near the police station. This center is intended to provide young offenders with all relevant contacts under one roof and offers of help. The aim is to make them familiar with the consequences of their actions, report All Lusatia.

The initiative was launched by Interior Minister Roland Wöller and Justice Minister Katja Meier, who underlined the importance of cooperation between the police, public prosecutor's office and youth justice system. The focus in Görlitz is on prevention. Unlike in Leipzig, where efforts are concentrated on intensive offenders, here attempts are made to address the problems of young people at an early stage. District Administrator Bernd Lange emphasizes that many young people in Görlitz are at risk of poverty and have hardly any prospects.

Lack of staff and the consequences

However, the public prosecutor's office in Görlitz is faced with further challenges. It is understaffed, which is confirmed by a statement from Justice Minister Katja Meier. The authorities are also struggling to attract young lawyers to these positions. The closure of the law faculty in Dresden is seen as a possible mistake, and attempts are being made to offer the traineeship in neighboring Bautzen to counteract the staff shortage.

The events of the last few days illustrate an urgent need for action in the region. Supporting young people and preventing violence are at the heart of efforts to prevent future incidents and ensure safety on the streets.
