Görlitz is electrified: from 2026 the first electric trains roll!

Görlitz, Deutschland - in Görlitz something happens! From mid -September, construction work for electrification of the section from Neisse Viaduct to the Görlitz train station begins. This reports the Radiolausitz and emphasizes that this is a crucial step to connect the city to the Polish overhead line network. Ulrich Mölke is the project manager and explains what measures are taken: two outer platforms are upgraded, soft installed and three bridges renewed.

The goal of this ambitious work is clear: from December next year, electric trains from Poland are to be entered in Görlitz. The future passengers can look forward to an IC connection to Warsaw! The section is around 700 meters long and part of a more than 100 kilometer route to lead to Cottbus via Weißwasser. The route is extensively expanded and electrified, whereby the plans are already in full.

a step -by -step progress

Even if the construction work only begins in the coming year, the plans already show impressive progress. According to MDR , electrical trains are to drive again in the Görlitz train station by 2026. The Polish railway PKP has already installed the overhead line up to the middle of the Neißebrücke. This will also be of great advantage for traffic between Germany and Poland.

The trains between Görlitz and Zgorzelec, as well as Jelenia Góra and Zielona Góra, are still dependent on diesel railcars. The trilex trains from Dresden to Zgorzelec are now driving, while the overhead line is completed on the Polish side. Another goal of these measures is to create a separation position between the German AC system and the Polish DC, which is expected to be planned in Görlitz station.

criticism of the expansion

Despite the progress, there are also critical voices. The Pro Bahn passenger association criticizes that there were failures when expanding the routes. In the state contract, the federal government had already assured the expansion of the routes to Görlitz in 2003. While the Breslau - Zgorzelec route in Poland was electrified by 2019, Germany remained idle for two decades. In addition, the association fears that people with restricted mobility could have difficulties because the platform height in Görlitz should be 55 cm, while at least 76 cm are required in Poland.

A height difference of 20 cm between exit and the platform could only be overcome with a lifting device, which entails additional challenges. At an information point in the reception hall of the Görlitz train station, interested parties can find out about the current project and ask all questions about the exciting infrastructure project.

So we look forward to the coming months - from December 2026, Görlitz could again become an important hub for international rail traffic before the first electrol locomotives enter the train station.
