Görlitz city council opens door for Lidl expansion and department store renovation!
A lot is happening in retail in Görlitz at the moment. The city council recently set the course for an important expansion that will not only improve the food supply, but also improve the cityscape. How Sächsische.de reported, the hurdles to expanding the Lidl branch on Christoph-Lüders-Straße have been removed. The plan is to expand the sales area from 1,000 to a total of 1,446 square meters. This step is part of a broader retail and center concept aimed at strengthening Görlitz as a central supply area.
A key obstacle so far has been the classification of the Lidl branch. It was not in the immediate residential area and was therefore not classified as an attractive supply location. A new Rewe store will also be built on the site of the former wagon factory, which will improve shopping opportunities. The approval of the revised retail concept was decided on December 19, 2024, with the aim of prioritizing the western city center for urban development, as on goerlitz.de can be read.
New perspectives for retail
The adjustments include the establishment of a central supply area in the western city center and the creation of a local supply location in Hagenwerder. There is already interest from a retail chain on August-Bebel-Strasse. These strategies are not only aimed at improving supply options, but also at making retail structures sustainable.
Visible changes also took place in the planned measures to revitalize the city center in Görlitz. There is increased emphasis on creating lively and inviting spaces to counteract declining retail density. The aim is to make inner cities more attractive, more multi-coded and “greener”. Urban planning Dr. Jansen emphasizes that small measures, such as creating beautiful places with water features or cozy ice cream parlors, can contribute to revitalization.
Voting and challenges
Despite the positive development, there were also critical voices. At the most recent city council meeting, a new point about the renovation of the Art Nouveau department store was introduced by Winfried Stöcker, which met with resistance. The Left Party and the Motor Görlitz/Alliance Greens/SPD faction expressed concerns about the short-term insertion and the attempt to speed up decisions to revive the department store. Mayor Octavian Ursu nevertheless supported the decision, even if there were concerns. The final decision on the conversion will be made by the Saxony State Directorate.
Overall, it shows that Görlitz is on an exciting path to redesigning its own retail landscape. With clear strategies and an active discussion about the use of spaces, the city should not only be strengthened economically, but also more lively and attractive for all citizens.
