Historic town hall Görlitz: 50 million for the new splendor!
Something exciting is happening in Görlitz: the town hall, which has been closed since 2004 and is a showpiece in Art Nouveau style, is finally being renovated after many years of standstill. Today, October 27, 2025, the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone took place for the extensive renovation work that will transform the listed building into a multifunctional event center. This renovation is by no means a coincidence, as the town hall was originally built for the Silesian Music Festival in 1910 and urgently needed a fresh coat of paint.
The city administration expects an investment amount of over 50 million euros, with the federal government and the Free State of Saxony jointly providing around 44 million euros. The city of Görlitz itself also contributed four million euros to the project. Construction work began in spring 2023 and is scheduled to last four years, so that the town hall can be reopened by 2029. It offers space for conferences, concerts and various cultural events – a real benefit for the region! Die Zeit reports that the large hall will in future offer space for around 1,400 guests, while a smaller hall is also intended for intimate events with up to 250 visitors.
Modern technology meets historical charm
The planned renovation work includes not only cosmetic refreshes, but also comprehensive technical installations such as electrical, heating, plumbing and ventilation systems. These measures are necessary to meet modern requirements and preserve the historic character of the building. Before the renovation had to be stopped in 2012, a lot of preparatory work had already been done. The closure in 2004 was ultimately a reaction to numerous structural defects and the associated financial hurdles. The road to this laying of the foundation stone was still rocky, but now there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. [MDR].
With the renovation and the planned extension, the town hall will cater to a modern audience - a real enrichment for Görlitz and the surrounding communities. There is already a lot of anticipation for the reopening, and we can only hope that the city has a really good hand with the new venue. It is not just a structural measure, but also a step into the future for the entire region!
