Cost explosion for resident parking in Görlitz: fees rise to 120 euros!
The city of Görlitz is facing a significant change in parking space management: From August 2023, the price for the resident parking permit will be increased from the current 30 euros to an impressive 120 euros. This resolution was recently passed by the city council and is intended to help expand the city's financial flexibility for important projects. The increase was announced three months ago in the budget debate and was made possible primarily by the removal of the legal limit for resident parking fees, such as the Saxon reported. The city administration had originally proposed doubling it to 60 euros, but factions such as the CDU, Citizens for Görlitz and Motor Görlitz/SPD/Alliance Greens pushed for the higher fee of 120 euros, which they consider appropriate.
A central point in this discussion is the view that the current 30 euros does not even cover the administration's processing costs. Robin Kulpa from Deutsche Umwelthilfe points out that the rising costs also reflect the actual use of public space. On the other hand, the AfD parliamentary group expressed concerns and sees this increase as an unequal treatment of residents between the city center and other parts of the city. This led to different votes, with the AfD voting against the resolution.
Increases and their justifications
The city sees the increase as a necessary step to differentiate resident parking from an indirect subsidy of car traffic. The new fees are intended to be used to support local public transport, which meets the needs of urban society. It's not just a single increase that's being sought; according to the Website of the city of Görlitz Gradual adjustments from 30 euros to further amounts of 50 euros and beyond are also conceivable. The discussion about the amount of the resident parking price remains exciting.
The legal basis for these increases is clearly provided by the new StVO. Municipalities can now set parking fees on a staggered basis according to urban planning concepts and traffic needs ADFC explained. This increased flexibility allows cities to better design and finance traffic safety and environmentally friendly developments. Another aspect that often comes up in the debate is the question of how cargo bikes and bicycles should be treated in public spaces, which represents an additional point of discussion.
The resolutions will come into force on August 1, 2023 and mark a new phase in the parking policy for Görlitz. The city now faces the challenge of both implementing these measures effectively and transparently communicating to citizens why these changes are necessary. The coming months will show how the population will react to the hefty increase and whether there are already discussions about possible alternatives in various corners of the city.
