Görlitz district: Ban on advertising for military services causes controversy!

The political landscape in the Görlitz district is currently seething. At the beginning of October 2025, the majority of the district councils decided to ban advertising for military services and defense products. As MDR reports, this decision was clearly well received, as many see it as a step towards greater peace and understanding. The resolution was adopted with 30 votes in favor, 26 against and three abstentions, a clear vote for the values of the district.

But the joy about this decision did not last long, because District Administrator Stephan Meyer (CDU) contradicted the decision. He expressed concerns about the legality, since responsibility for military advertising lies with the federal government. He also calls the contradiction a sign of responsibility and explains that the decision violates the state's neutrality requirement.

Political turmoil and voting problems

Another incident exacerbated the already tense situation: A special meeting of the district council to discuss the issue again took place, but lasted less than five minutes. Only 31 of 86 district councilors were present, meaning the meeting did not have a quorum. Only one district councilor from the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht/Free Voters Zittau (BSW/FWZ) faction was present. The strongest faction, the AfD, was completely absent, which its chairman Hajo Exner justified with scheduling conflicts and a flu epidemic.

The district administrator was annoyed by the low participation and described the absence of many councilors as not very responsible. A new vote on the BSW/FWZ application is planned for the regular district council meeting on December 10, 2025. So it remains to be seen whether a majority will be in favor of the advertising ban or whether the debate will continue to fizzle out.

A circle of peace

The BSW/FWZ parliamentary group's motion argues that advertising for military services contradicts the ideals of a district that sees itself as a “circle of peace and understanding.” This debate about values and responsibility is rippling through the political ranks, and future decisions could have far-reaching consequences.

Aside from the political discussions, there are also encouraging developments in the district. For example in retail, where customers can get good deals from specialized online and retail providers. Take a look at MediaMarkt, where not only photo paper is offered, but also many other items with interesting price promotions. Plus, for moderately large purchases, financing can be arranged that allows payments to be spread over several months.

No matter whether you are interested in the political situation in the district or the latest retail offers, things remain exciting in Görlitz. Decisions made here could have significance far beyond the district's borders - because there is a lot of responsibility at stake.
