Neighborhood dispute escalates: man attacked with an ax!
A 51-year-old man is the focus of a sensational trial that has been heard at the Görlitz regional court since Wednesday. He is charged with attempted murder, grievous bodily harm and trespassing. How MDR reported, this case is about a brutal conflict that began in April 2025 in the municipality of Seifhennersdorf near Gren.
The defendant is said to have attacked his neighbor with a 72 centimeter long splitting ax in the middle of a neighborhood dispute that had lasted for years. According to the victim, there was initially a scuffle during which he was punched in the face several times. He was only able to escape by retreating into his car while the defendant chased him. When the injured party finally asked his wife to call the police, the defendant returned with the ax while the injured party defended himself with a broom handle. He received support from his wife, who tried to film the scene, which ultimately deterred the attacker.
Significant injuries caused by violence
The consequences of this brutal confrontation were serious. The injured party suffered a traumatic brain injury and other injuries. The defendant's defense attorney claims that there was no ax blow and denies the allegations of attempted murder. The defendant himself has not yet commented on the allegations.
Incidents like this highlight current trends in violent crime in Germany. Loud Statista Violent crimes account for less than 4% of all crimes recorded by the police, but their dramatic nature significantly influences people's sense of security. In 2024, around 217,000 violent crimes were registered in Germany, which is the highest level since 2007.
Increase in acts of violence and their causes
Interestingly, the number of violent crimes rose again after reaching a low during the 2021 coronavirus pandemic. The reasons for this increase are diverse. Reference is often made to the economic uncertainties and social burdens. The increase in suspected children and young people is particularly worrying, which is linked to the ongoing psychological stress caused by the Corona measures. The BKA reports an increase in violent crime, which marks the highest level since 2007.
The current statistics and the dramatic incidents clearly show that a rethink is necessary in society in order to prevent violent clashes. It remains to be seen how the trial in Görlitz will proceed and what conclusions society will draw from such events.
