New teaching degree in Görlitz and Zittau: Apply now!
Görlitz, Deutschland - The lack of teachers in Saxony remains a hot iron that is now being tackled with a new teaching degree at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. Applications for the course "Teaching at high school with special education" are now possible, which will start in the coming winter semester. According to Radio Lausitz to counteract in Upper Lusatia.
Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow (CDU) emphasizes that the need for qualified teachers in the region is urgent, especially since up to 1,500 teachers in Saxony retire every year. "We have to break new ground," emphasizes Gemkow. And this is also underlined by the cooperation between the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and the University of Leipzig, which was created especially for this course. Here the students are prepared for inclusive school practice, a necessary measure in times when the job registration at schools has become more than ever.
unique range of courses
The special highlight of the new course? The students are not only trained in two subjects for teaching at high schools, but also receive an extension subject in the special educational focus. This is unique in Saxony and could help win the urgently needed teachers. 60 study places are awarded each year, which are created in a period of 10 semesters. Im Rahmen der Maßnahme wird ein Eckpunktepapier zur Umsetzung unterzeichnet, ein klares Zeichen dafür, dass die Politik hinter der Initiative steht, wie die Saxony reported.
But what does the reality look like in the teaching profession? The Saxon Teachers' Association warns that despite all efforts, the shortage of teachers at high schools and other types of school continues to be a problem. For the school year 2022/2023, 1,500 teaching positions had to be filled, but only a part of the available places could be filled by complete applicants. In addition, many trained teachers have difficulty getting involved in other types of school, although the payment is the same.
Future of the teaching profession in Saxony
The efforts to reform in teacher training are a step in the right direction. Measures such as incentive systems, e.g. candidate surcharges, try to make the teaching profession more attractive. The number of teaching studies has also been significantly increased since 2012 and should make it easier for young people to tackle training. However, the question remains how many high school graduates really decide to study teaching at middle and high schools and to what extent these new offers are important for the region.
The state government's action program and the new training centers for trainee lawyers are intended to help combat the shortage of teachers. In addition, there is more and more support for young professionals through further training measures and non-pedagogical staff at schools. However, it remains to be seen how successful these measures will be in the future.
