O-See Mania: 25 years of triathlon action in Upper Lusatia!
A sporting highlight is coming up in Zittau: The Saxony Cross Triathlon is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The event has long since established itself as a fixed date in the calendars of top athletes. How Sächsische.de reported that the demand for the main routes for the competitions was huge and the places for participants were quickly sold out. Athletes from Upper Lusatia in particular have a good knack for preparing for competitions and will fight for top positions.
Chief organizer Klaus “Benno” Schwager describes the event as the most traditional Xterra event in the world. The competitions take place at the picturesque Olbersdorfer See, where participants can rely on well-organized processes. The age group-specific European Championships and German Championships also attract athletes who want to compete in this event.
An exciting program
With a combination of sport and fun, the elite competitions start on Saturday at 11.30 a.m. The elite race includes an impressive 1.5 kilometers of swimming, followed by 37 kilometers of mountain biking and finally 10 kilometers of running. Of course, the age group athletes don't miss out either: they also fight for European and German titles and have the chance to qualify for the World Championships.
This year the transition area was enlarged to give the athletes more space and allow the competitions to take place more quickly. Many athletes who spontaneously want to take part in the success of the event also take advantage of short-term registration options.
The historical context
While the sporting events in Zittau are causing a stir, researchers and historians are working on the development of symbols that have accompanied us all the way back to antiquity. An example is the cross, which was originally considered a shameful symbol of crucifixion and death. Biblical Archaeology shows that the first depictions of Jesus' crucifixion are only known to us in the 5th century AD.
Over time, the cross has transformed from a symbol of humiliation to a central symbol of Christianity. This change took about 400 years and is reflected in the early writings. The cross, once offensive and associated with torture, is now widely used in churches and as jewelry.
Targeted marketing and cultural changes have permanently changed the way we view the cross. A historical change in perspective that has become increasingly pronounced over the last few centuries. Both in ancient times and today, we can see how meanings and perceptions of symbols evolve, telling stories that are deeply rooted in our culture.
This year's anniversary of the Saxony Cross Triathlon is not only an important sporting event, but also an opportunity to reflect on how traditions develop and changes become visible in our society.
