Shock! 15-year-old cyclist seriously injured in hit-and-run in Großröhrsdorf
A serious accident in Großröhrsdorf, more precisely in the Hauswalde district, caused a stir on July 16, 2025. A 15-year-old cyclist wanted to turn onto Ohorner Straße around 3:55 p.m. when she collided with an SUV. He wanted to turn left from the main road and hit the girl, who was traveling without a helmet. The young cyclist suffered serious injuries and had to be flown to the hospital. The driver of the SUV left his vehicle behind and fled in an unknown direction; the damage to the bicycle is estimated at around 200 euros. The police are asking for help and are looking for witnesses, especially occupants of another vehicle that was driving behind the fleeing SUV.
However, events in the region were not limited to this terrible incident. On the same day there was another accident in Bautzen at around 8:35 p.m. A 25-year-old driver of a Honda Jazz collided with a pedestrian who was crossing the road. In a breath alcohol test, the pedestrian had a blood alcohol level of 1.30, which further complicates the investigation.
Drunk driving: A dangerous risk
Driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious problem not only in Germany but worldwide, which not only endangers road safety but also leads to serious accidents. The blood alcohol limit in Germany is 0.5, above this value you face fines and possibly the loss of your driving license. From 1.1 per mille you are legally considered unfit to drive, which is associated with an enormous risk of accidents. Around two million traffic accidents occur in Germany every year, with driving under the influence of alcohol making up a significant proportion and only exceeded by speeding, as [meine-auto.info](https://www.meine-auto.info/ratgeber/ Alcohol-am-steuer.html) reports.
The consequences of drunk driving are often not immediately visible, as alcohol impairs memory and can even lead to so-called “film tears”. This risk increases significantly from an alcohol content of 1.5 per mille, which is often used as an excuse to avoid responsibility. Such memory loss can result in people no longer being able to accurately assess what they are doing. This is particularly life-threatening in road traffic, as can be seen from fuhrerscheine.de.
Police measures and controls
Similar alcohol checks also took place in other areas of the region. On the same day, July 16th, in Haselbachtal, in the Reichenbach district, a 47-year-old driver of a Skoda who was driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.50 was checked. His further journey was also prohibited. Speed checks had previously been carried out in Großröhrsdorf, in which 63 drivers were speeding, including some who were speeding at high speeds of over 60 km/h. The police also punished traffic violations in Hoyerswerda involving drivers without a license and under the influence of drugs.
What is happening in the region clearly shows how important road safety and responsible driving are. With each inspection, the authorities hope to raise awareness of the dangers of road traffic and prevent such tragic accidents in the future.
