Discover the world of birds: Win with NABU in the Upper Lusatian mountains!

In the heart of the Upper Lusatian mountains, a special hands-on activity is being launched this year, which will not only be fun, but also raise awareness of our feathered friends. The NABU (Nature Conservation Association of Germany) calls on all citizens to observe birds in residential areas and report their sightings. The campaign is called “Swarm formation – swarming for ornithology and sustainability in the Upper Lusatian mountains” and focuses on recording the breeding locations of building-dwelling bird species in Ebersbach, Kottmar and Neusalza-Spremberg.

The focus is particularly on the house martin and barn swallow, the jackdaw, the redstart, the spotted flycatcher, the swift and the kestrel. The campaign runs until July 15th, and observations can be made conveniently via an online form by email naturschutzstation.ebersbach@nabu-sachsen.de or by telephone on 03586 368347. Anyone who takes part also has the chance to win great prizes, including vouchers and tickets for various local institutions such as the Zittau Zoo or the Senckenberg Museum Görlitz.

Shared nature experience

The NABU campaign also includes the idea of shared experiences in nature. The idea behind the reporting campaign is not just to collect data, but rather to promote a shared experience of nature. Loud NABU The collected observations will help to document the diversity of bird life during migration. One report per event is desired, and ideally this should be reported by the excursion leaders or the participants themselves.

The data collected is recorded centrally and made accessible via the Naturgucker portal. In this way, not only bird species but also the number of individuals can be recorded, which brings participants closer to the fascinating world of ornithology.

Conservation and awareness

The protection of nature and wildlife has gained momentum in recent years. Across Germany, especially in North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony, there are numerous projects dedicated to protecting endangered species. How vogelundnatur.de reports, local habitats are being promoted as part of various initiatives, such as the “White Stork Species Protection Program” in Saxony. Such projects are not only fundamental for biodiversity, but also for the population's general awareness of the beauty and fragility of nature.

The NABU participation campaign offers an excellent opportunity to get active and observe nature right on your doorstep. No more excuses: now is the time to take a closer look at your surroundings and take action to protect our feathered fellow residents!
