Water pipe is being replaced in Oybin: main access closed for three months!
From Monday, Friedrich-Engels-Strasse in Oybin will be closed for three months. The reason for the closure is the replacement of a drinking water pipe that has existed since 1905 and urgently needs to be replaced. The measure was only announced to residents at short notice and affects the main access to Oybin up to Käthe-Kollwitz-Straße, which is particularly worrying for Hagen Ullrich's “Oybintal” restaurant. The owner fears that fewer tourists will come because they don't know the place well and may not be able to find their way past.
Wolfgang Rücker from “Gebirgexpress” expresses similar concerns. He sees the need for traffic light regulation to control traffic and minimize the impact on residents and businesses. A detour leads through the community, but buses and emergency services are allowed to pass through the construction site, which at least partially guarantees accessibility. Matthias Seifert, head of the technology department, emphasizes that the full closure is necessary in order not to affect school bus traffic and to comply with occupational health and safety guidelines.
Investments for safe drinking water supplies
The total costs for the construction work amount to around 500,000 euros. This investment is part of a larger trend in Germany where there is a need to make water infrastructure future-proof. According to the German Gas and Water Association, the condition of water pipes in Germany varies greatly and individually tailored modernization strategies are required. Urbanization and population decline in rural regions require urgent adjustments to the existing infrastructure. Forward-looking and long-term planning is essential to ensure the preservation of assets and security of supply. DVGW reports on the challenges in water infrastructure.
The construction work in Oybin goes hand in hand with the nationwide approach of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, which has also set out investments in the maintenance and replacement of waterways in the “Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030”. This shows how important it is to modernize infrastructure to secure both transport and water supplies. Projects are identified using a staged evaluation process, with the focus on economic profitability and connections to important transport routes. BMDV provides information about the planned infrastructure projects.
The renewal of the water pipe in Oybin is not only aimed at solving the problem immediately, but also represents a long-term benefit for the community. A well-functioning water infrastructure is of inestimable value, both for current and future generations. In this sense, the work in Oybin is a step in the right direction to address the challenges of modern water supply while supporting the local economy.
