Future for Görlitz: Renovation of the department store will start soon!
A significant step for the city of Görlitz: On November 5, 2025, the Saxony State Directorate officially approved the renovation of the historic Görlitz department store. This decision brings joy among city officials and brings a breath of fresh air into the plans for the building, which has been vacant for years and was opened in 1913 and most recently belonged to the Hertie department store chain. Since its closure in 2009, the department store has been a shadow of its former self and has only served as a backdrop for film productions, such as the award-winning film “The Grand Budapest Hotel” [ Time online ] reported.
The President of the State Directorate, Béla Bélafi, explained that this positive decision was issued after a thorough examination of all relevant arguments. The approval now gives the client, Winfried Stöcker, planning security while he prepares for the building permit. In order to preserve the listed character of the house, we work closely with the monument protection authority. Special attention will be paid to the handling of listed elements.
Redevelopment and public interests
The planned changes will aim to not significantly impair the original character of the cultural monument, with the public interest in the conversion clearly overriding the interests of monument protection law. This is also highlighted by Mayor Octavian Ursu, who emphasizes the importance of the renovation for the city and inner-city retail. The revitalization of the department store not only aims to preserve a historic building, but also makes an important contribution to strengthening the local economy.
A small point of contention is the use of the two attics and some details of the roof construction. However, these issues will be discussed intensively in order to find an amicable solution. The positive decision is a signal to the people of Görlitz that the department store could soon regain new life and contribute to the revitalization of the cityscape.
Progress on this project will be closely monitored by both residents and business owners in the area. Many are hoping for an upswing in retail and the new opportunities that the new department store will offer. The former department store could once again serve as a shopping destination for Görlitz residents and visitors in the near future.
