More and more preschool children in Saxony: deferral before school!

What do parents in Saxony do when it comes to sending their children to school? More and more of them are applying for deferral because they believe that their offspring are not yet ready for everyday school life. In fact, the number of deferred children in Saxony rose to almost ten percent last year, a significant increase compared to previous years MDR reported. In the 2022/2023 school year, 9.27 percent of the 38,126 school starters were only classified at the age of seven.

As an example, Anne Elsner from Dresden has registered her son for the coming school year, but is also planning to defer him because she doesn't think he's mature enough yet. What is particularly noticeable is that boys in particular are affected by this deferral problem. An analysis of the past few years shows that deferrals have continuously increased.

Provisions in numbers

School boards do not pose additional administrative challenges, even if the trend continues. A feedback system was developed to invite deferred children to the next school registration. The following provisions were registered in various cities in Saxony:

  • Chemnitz: 246 (160 Jungen, 86 Mädchen)
  • Dresden: 368 (243 Jungen, 125 Mädchen)
  • Leipzig: 404 (269 Jungen, 135 Mädchen)
  • Erzgebirgskreis: 243 (141 Jungen, 102 Mädchen)
  • Kreis Zwickau: 221 (145 Jungen, 76 Mädchen)
  • Mittelsachsen: 217 (125 Jungen, 92 Mädchen)
  • Vogtlandkreis: 131 (88 Jungen, 43 Mädchen)
  • Kreis Bautzen: 169 (111 Jungen, 58 Mädchen)
  • Kreis Görlitz: 189 (127 Jungen, 62 Mädchen)
  • Kreis Meißen: 130 (72 Jungen, 58 Mädchen)
  • Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge: 139 (98 Jungen, 41 Mädchen)
  • Kreis Leipzig: 168 (106 Jungen, 62 Mädchen)
  • Nordsachsen: 122 (83 Jungen, 39 Mädchen)

These figures show not only parents' concerns, but also a growing sensitivity to children's individual needs. The Dresden Health Department often advises against making provisions unless there are significant health or psychosocial reasons. Since 2024, the proportion of children for whom school doctors do not recommend a regular school start has also fallen - to just 6 percent.
