After a 35-year break from broadcasting, the “Filmbühne Geithain” cinema will open its doors again on October 15, 2025. Back then, in the GDR, the cinema was very popular and was a central place of cultural life. But after the fall of communism in 1990, films were no longer shown and the cinema fell into oblivion. Thanks to a promising cooperation between the Geithain community center and the Schaubühne Lindenfels from Leipzig, the film stage is now being revitalized. daily news reports that there are two films on the program for this memorable day: “Girl, Girl” as an afternoon film and the Stephen King adaptation “The Life of Chuck” in the evening. The latter is celebrated as a poetic story and promises an interesting narrative.
Both those responsible and cinema director Sonja Holzinger emphasize the importance of cultural offerings in smaller cities. “Cinema is more than just watching films, it is a place for encounters and social participation,” says Holzinger. On opening day, viewers can even vote on the next film, which offers an exciting opportunity to actively participate in the selection.
Regular demonstrations planned
The cinema screenings will then continue with planned regularity. The next dates have already been set: December 17, 2025, February 18, 2026 and April 22, 2026. These events are aimed at all generations and aim to further increase the frequency over time. There are also plans to train local people in cinema operations, which will strengthen identification with the cinema and its offerings.
The Geithain film stage will be located in the community center, Louis-Petermann-Straße 100, bringing a piece of history back to the region.
