Bakayoko: Leipzig and Leverkusen in the race for the star wing!

One name that is blowing through footy Europe this week is Johan Bakayoko. The talented PSV Eindhoven winger remains at the top of RB Leipzig's shopping list. Sacha Tavolieri from FussballTransfers reports that the Saxons have had their eyes on the 22-year-old since January. A signing could almost be a must for Leipzig, considering the competition.

But Borussia Dortmund also has their eye on Bakayoko. However, Bayer Leverkusen currently seems to be ahead. The Werkself scouting department sees the player as the ideal new signing for the offensive. However, coach Erik ten Hag is hesitant to integrate Bakayoko as a permanent part of the team. A strong argument for Leverkusen: Bakayoko costs around 20 million euros, which is more than a fair offer in the current transfer landscape.

The winger's career

The native of the Netherlands lost his regular place in the second half of the season and was able to record 15 points scorer in 47 games. In the 2024/25 season, Bakayoko was active in various competitions, including the Eredivisie and the UEFA Champions League. Unfortunately, he was not in the squad for the national team's last international matches against North Macedonia and Wales.

Additionally, it should be noted that his statistics paint an interesting picture last season: in a single competitive game, the Dutch Supercup against Feyenoord, Bakayoko played to the fullest and was able to demonstrate his talent in 90 minutes, despite the dramatic penalty shootout that ended in a 6-8 score.

Transfer market in focus

The general transfer balance in the Bundesliga also shows interesting developments. According to Transfermarkt, there were 326 additions and 311 departures this season. Overall, there was a negative balance of over 89 million euros in the Bundesliga. The clubs are investing diligently, with expenditure per club amounting to around 43 million euros. What is particularly striking is that the average age groups of arrivals and departures are relatively young, which indicates a slow but steady reorientation of the clubs.

This season could be the decisive step for Bakayoko. It remains to be seen whether he will ultimately find his new place at Bayer Leverkusen. But what is certain is that eyes in the Bundesliga are on the young winger and his potential continues to be hotly debated.

The football world is turned upside down - and we are excited to see where the path will lead for Johan Bakayoko.
