A court case to upgrade the party's classification as “secure right-wing extremist” is already underway, but is still in its early stages. What is particularly striking is that in May 2024 the Higher Administrative Court decided that the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution was entitled to view the AfD as a suspected right-wing extremist case. This means that the party may be monitored using intelligence means.
Right-wing extremism on the rise
These decisions come in a worrying context. Reactions and outlook
The AfD has heavily criticized the decision to classify it as a suspected right-wing extremist case, arguing that it is unfounded and not legally binding. Despite the rejection of their appeals, the party still sees itself in the ring. The ongoing proceedings and the escalation of the situation are creating a lot of conversation across the political spectrum, and it will be exciting to see how the situation develops.
The real challenge, however, is how these developments will affect society as a whole. With a significant increase in right-wing extremist activity, it is clear that there is a serious social problem that needs to be addressed. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution therefore remains required to maintain an overview of the dynamic situation. We will keep an eye on developments and the positions of those involved and report on them in a timely manner.
