Leipzig Airport cancels Tirana flights: Where to travel now?
Leipzig Airport is currently making a name for itself because there are some exciting changes to the flight offerings in the upcoming 2025/2026 winter season. What is particularly noticeable is the canceled direct connection to Tirana, Albania. From November 1st, this flight will no longer be offered by WizzAir - a decision that affects many holidaymakers in the region. Until now, Tirana has been popular for its impressive combination of Ottoman, Italian and communist architecture. The reasons for the cancellation are still unclear, but it is speculated that demand fell short of expectations. A look at the utilization shows that it fell from almost 90 percent in October 2024 to just 62.2 percent in January 2025. This suggests that many travelers may prefer other destinations.
Despite the removal of this connection, Leipzig Airport remains a heavily frequented hub. The desire to travel to other destinations continues unabated and the airport continues to offer attractive travel destinations. These include Mallorca, Fuerteventura, Corfu, Istanbul, Hurghada, Faro and London. This leaves vacationers with the opportunity to look forward to numerous other dream destinations, especially in the high season that is currently evident here. Stuttgart, Berlin, and shortly afterwards the Scandinavian cities are welcome to complete the offer.
New flight routes and further developments
Since May there has also been a new cooperation between SunExpress and Electra Airways, which offers flights to Varna and Burgas in Bulgaria. These connections have been established and will continue to exist throughout the winter. This means that Leipzig is not cut off from international air traffic even in the cold season, which will particularly please those who love to travel. The connection to Bucharest also remains open in winter, which easily increases the travel options to this region.
Looking beyond borders, current statistics from Eurostat show that air traffic in the EU is experiencing a remarkable recovery overall. In 2023, 973 million passengers were transported in the EU, an increase of 19.3 percent compared to the previous year. This development not only underlines the resurgent travel industry, but also the ongoing interest in air travel of all kinds. Despite these positive trends, Leipzig remains an important location for regional connections and relies on proven airlines that take passengers to a wide variety of regions in Europe.
Overall, the future at Leipzig Airport looks promising despite a dropped connection to Tirana, and anticipation for upcoming flight routes is increasing. Perhaps the route to Albania will soon be on the flight schedule again, as demand could revive until the summer flight schedule of 2026. WizzAir plans to fly to Tirana three times a week again from this point onwards and is hoping for a speedy return.
For those planning their next trips, there is no reason to worry, as Leipzig remains a central starting point for various attractive travel destinations!
