Leipzig Airport cancels connection to Tirana: unclear reasons!

Leipzig Airport is currently a popular destination for travelers, especially during the holiday season. The recovery of air transport in the EU is clear, especially since the gradual lifting of COVID-19 restrictions. This brings with it peak activity, such as on June 13, 2025, when the airport recorded a high rush, which Thüringen24 reports. Despite these positive developments, an important direct connection will be canceled in the 2025/2026 winter flight schedule.

From November 1, 2025, the direct connection to Tirana, Albania will no longer be served. This connection was most recently offered by the airline WizzAir and initially enjoyed high utilization. Occupancy was almost 90% in October of the previous year, but fell drastically to just 62.2% in January 2025. My Leipzig notes that the reasons for the cancellation of the connection are officially unclear. Assumptions about low demand are making the rounds.

Leipzig Airport remains an attractive travel destination

Although one destination is no longer available, Leipzig Airport continues to offer a wide range of sought-after travel destinations. From Mallorca to Fuerteventura to Istanbul and London – travelers are still spoiled for choice. The connection from Schkeuditz to Bucharest also remains in place in winter, which shows that the airport remains an important hub.

However, a comeback is on the cards for WizzAir. The airline plans to offer the connection to Tirana three times a week again in the 2026 summer flight schedule. This gives hope that travelers will soon be able to once again explore the Ottoman, Italian and communist architecture of the Albanian capital, for which Tirana is known.

Development of air transport in the EU

Despite the challenges and the cancellation of a destination, Leipzig Airport remains an important hub in European air traffic and will continue to demonstrate its appeal for travelers next winter.
