Leipzig Airport: Connection to Tirana is canceled – companies under pressure!

Leipzig/Halle Airport is a real airport hotspot in the current holiday season. Anyone who checks in there can look forward to numerous exciting travel options. However, there is a downside, especially for fans of Albania: from November 1st, the direct connection to Tirana, the fascinating capital of Albania, will no longer be offered. This route was previously served by the airline WizzAir. The reason for the cancellation is not yet officially known, but it is speculated that the connection was not as popular as hoped and had rather low utilization.

Tirana is a city with eclectic and colorful architecture that combines Ottoman, Italian and communist styles. Unfortunately, it looks like passengers will have to miss this interesting winter destination. Loud thuringia24 and People's voice The utilization of Tirana flights fell from almost 90 percent in October 2024 to just 62.2 percent in January 2025. A clear signal that the airline cannot ignore.

New travel destinations at Leipzig/Halle Airport

But not everything is lost. Leipzig/Halle Airport also has new destinations in store. Since May, SunExpress has been flying to Varna and Burgas in Bulgaria together with Electra Airways. These two destinations remain on offer even during the winter months, which is great news for travelers interested in the sunny beaches of the Black Sea. In addition, flights to popular destinations such as Mallorca and Istanbul will continue to be offered.

However, the cancellation of the connection to Tirana does not mean the end for travelers to Albania. WizzAir plans to fly the connection three times a week again from the summer flight schedule of 2026. This could be welcome news for all Albania lovers who want to explore the beautiful capital and its surroundings.
