Leipzig Airport: Wizz Air cancels Tirana – what’s behind it?
In the heart of the holiday season, Leipzig Airport is experiencing a real rush of activity. But while travelers are looking forward to their flights, there is also less good news from the 2025/2026 winter flight schedule. From November 1st, the popular direct connection to Tirana, Albania will no longer be offered. This route, which until recently was operated by the airline Wizz Air was served has now been deleted. The reason for this decision remains unclear, but it is speculated that low demand on the flight to Tirana may have led to it.
Tirana is a city known for its fascinating mix of Ottoman, Italian and communist architecture - a place that would have been worth visiting. Despite the cancellation of this connection, Leipzig Airport can still serve a wide range of destinations. Popular travel destinations such as Mallorca, Fuerteventura, Corfu, Istanbul, Hurghada, Faro and London are still on the program. Passengers will therefore have many options to choose from in the coming season.
Wizz Air ends flight operations in Leipzig
But it's not just the connection to Tirana that falls victim to the red pencil. Thuringia24 reports that Wizz Air will also cease its activities at Leipzig/Halle Airport altogether for the 2025/26 winter flight schedule. This affects three destinations: in addition to Tirana, Varna in Bulgaria and Bucharest in Romania. There were months of negotiations between the airline and the airport operator, but in the end no fair solutions could be found.
The airport operator partly explains the decision with the rising location costs, which have risen sharply in Germany since 2020. In addition, Wizz Air had demanded “very fair conditions” and needed additional marketing support that the airport company could not provide. These developments also shed light on the challenges facing many low-cost airlines today. Statista has shown that the market share of cost reductions among German low-cost carriers has increased significantly over the last few years.
The future of low-cost airlines
Strong competition and aggressive price wars have put pressure on ticket prices, which is beneficial for many airline customers. Nevertheless, airlines such as Wizz Air and Ryanair are facing major challenges, which is reflected not least in the closure of bases. Wizz Air is not only planning to withdraw from Leipzig Airport, but has also closed its base in Abu Dhabi. The Federal Association of the German Aviation Industry (BDL) also warns of the enormous increase in costs that could put a strain on operations.
As a spectator of these airy developments, it remains to be seen whether other airlines will be found to fill the gap left by Wizz Air. Until then, travelers in Leipzig can continue to look forward to numerous other wonderful travel destinations as an era comes to an end.
