Halle and Leipzig: New ways of working together after the inaugural visit!
On June 16, 2025, the cities of Halle (Saale) and Leipzig took a significant step towards closer cooperation. Mayor of Hall Dr. At their most recent meeting, Alexander Vogt and his Leipzig colleague Burkhard Jung emphasized that the two cities not only want to intensify their contacts, but also expand them on an economic and cultural level. This is particularly important for the positive development of Halle, which Leipzig values as a “sister city”.
Currently, the cultural connection between Halle and Leipzig is mainly limited to the joint Museum Night. Dr. Vogt considers this to be too little and calls for a large number of further cultural projects that go beyond what is currently on offer. Joint festivals, exhibitions or even theater projects that could bring the two cities even closer together are conceivable.
Use economic potential
Both cities and the associated districts, Leipzig and Saalekreis, offer great potential, particularly in the economic sector. Together they have around 1.3 million inhabitants, making them the largest metropolitan area in eastern Germany after Berlin. The central question remains: How can we promote the establishment of new businesses? Both mayors see many opportunities here that need to be explored.
A first step in this direction is a joint council conference, which is scheduled to take place after the summer break. This conference is seen as an important forum for exchange at the administrative level and is intended to set the course for future cooperation. In addition, a second visit from Dr. Vogt in Leipzig to coordinate the next steps and work out further details.
A sign of cohesion
The shared attitude of both city leaders is the key to a successful partnership that is not only limited to internal regional issues, but also includes European and international ways of thinking. This willingness to engage in dialogue has, among other things, contributed to Leipzig's positive development since 2006. Halle and Leipzig are on a common path to send a signal for cohesion and strategic partnership in Central Germany.
In Germany there are a total of around 6,500 town twinning relationships, which in turn arise for various reasons, such as cultural exchange on the one hand and economic interests on the other. A good example are the 24 partnerships that Cologne maintains, making this city a pioneer. Halle and Leipzig now seem ready to strengthen their own network and take on a significant role in the large number of city networks. The development of the next steps is eagerly awaited.
For the citizens of both cities, this initiative offers a promising prospect of new, free development opportunities in cultural and economic fields. Halle and Leipzig are ready to look forward to a strong and successful future together.
