Crocodile offspring at Leipzig Zoo: New eggs, new hope!
There is currently a wonderful reason to be happy at Leipzig Zoo: 13 stump crocodiles have seen the light of day! On Thursday, like Picture reported that the little crocodiles hatched from their eggs, and twelve of them successfully mastered their first life adventure. This is a particular joy for the zoo as it is the first stumpy crocodile birth since 2008.
The proud mother, who has been living at the zoo since 1994 and is estimated to be 30 years old, keeps an eye on her young animals, while her partner has been in Leipzig since 2012. Zoo director Prof. Dr. Jörg Junhold emphasizes the great importance of the protective measures that have been taken to keep predators such as Nile perch out of the newly divided freshwater basin.
An undisturbed living space
In order to guarantee the well-being of the animals, Leipzig Zoo has a lot to do every day. This includes, among other things, cleaning the enclosures, feeding and training sessions for the animals Thuringia24 reported. The swamp crocodiles Lido and Kork, who are also very popular, are currently hidden behind the scenes of the zoo. The reason? Construction work for a new aquarium and terrarium, which is intended to create new opportunities for animal husbandry.
Despite the turbulent times, Lido and Kork continue to be fed, their enclosures are cleaned and training sessions take place. Animal keeper Christian Patzer tries to train the two with a target. However, it appears that the crocodiles are showing less interest in training due to the breeding mound and eggs they are currently guarding. Patzer explains that this is to be expected since the eggs are in the sand at the training area door. If the conditions are right, the eggs could theoretically be fertilized by the end of September.
A look into the future
Visitors to the zoo can look forward to exciting times. With a bit of luck, the offspring could not only marvel at the new terrarium, but also the little crocodiles themselves. These useful measures not only for the animals, but also for the zoo culture, are the focus of Leipzig Zoo's efforts. Blunt crocodiles are a remarkable species that faces threats from illegal hunting and habitat destruction in the wild. The Zoo's commitment to protection and conservation is reinforced with each new birth.
