What actually happens in Leipzig when nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts meet? Exactly: a great campaign that not only offers you fun, but also makes a good contribution to the environment. The “Green Kayak” initiative, which was launched in Leipzig in May 2024, wonderfully brings together environmental protection and leisure enjoyment. Participants have the opportunity to paddle a kayak across the Leipzig canals for two hours for free - and best of all: you collect rubbish while doing it! “Green Kayak” is not just an environmentally friendly leisure activity, but a real activity with meaning. Since 2017, volunteers have collected a whopping 144 tons of trash from waterways and banks around the world - proof of how even small actions can have a big impact.
Details about the campaign
Participants can rent kayaks at three special boat rental shops in Leipzig: in the city harbor, at the Klingerweg boat rental shop and in the Herold boat shop and rental shop. Anyone who decides to take part will get everything they need: buckets, grippers and life jackets are available on site, so it's easy to get started. The collected waste is stored in an integrated trash can on board and then disposed of in the trash cans provided. The offer is aimed at everyone – locals, tourists, school classes and even refugees are warmly invited to take part. Groups of eight or more people also have the opportunity to book additional boats at low cost.
