Leipzig's S-Bahn: Simplified or slowed down? The interim year 2026!

On June 24, 2025, the special purpose association for the Leipzig local transport area (ZVNL) presented the new timetables for the Leipzig S-Bahn in the interim year 2026. This transition year comes into force due to fundamental changes in the S-Bahn Central Germany route network, which will take effect from December 14, 2025. The adjustments are necessary to prepare the S-Bahn for the upcoming MDSB2025plus transport contract, which begins on December 13, 2026. With the new timetables, passengers will be faced with both improvements and depressing changes, which are already causing a lot of conversation. That's what she reports Leipzig internet newspaper.

One of the most noticeable changes is the deletion of the S10, which affects the connection from Grünau to the Porsche factory, for example. This district has around 50,000 inhabitants and is an important workplace location for companies such as DHL, BMW and Porsche. The previous travel times from Grünau to these companies – up to 1 hour and 20 minutes – will not exactly be optimized by the cancellation of the S10. In addition, there are always problems with the timetables of the S10, which has rarely worked as planned since it was put into operation.

Increase in waiting times

The interim year also brings important changes to evening traffic. From 8 p.m., passengers on four S-Bahn lines will have to expect waiting times to double: instead of every 30 minutes, they will now only run every hour. This affects over 100,000 commuters who regularly use the S-Bahn services. He reports that too MDR. The reasons for these adjustments include price increases for energy and vehicles as well as a financing gap of 10 to 15 million euros, which must be covered either through savings or government subsidies.

Despite the negative developments, some areas should also benefit from them. Nighttime services have been reduced to a 60-minute frequency for the S4 and S3, but the overall service remains relatively dense in the evening due to the overlapping of five lines. The goal? Leipzig wants to remain a “city of short distances” and increase the proportion of walking, cycling and local public transport to 70 percent by 2025.

Connection to the airport

The connection to Leipzig/Halle Airport is of particular interest to travelers. The S-Bahn lines S 5 and S 5X run here, connecting Halle, Leipzig, Altenburg and Zwickau with the airport. The journey time from Leipzig main station is only 12 minutes. Trains run every 30 minutes during peak hours and hourly outside of peak times. Here, too, attention is paid to accessibility, so that the check-in area can be easily reached via elevators and escalators, such as S-Bahn Central Germany informed.

The new timetables therefore represent a complex challenge for residents and commuters in and around Leipzig. The hope remains that the interim year will not be viewed as a permanent measure, but will serve as a precursor to better and more stable connections in the future. The next stage of the development of the S-Bahn network will have a significant impact on the quality of the connection.
