New A72 release: Zwenkau finally connected to Leipzig!
The transport connection between Leipzig and Chemnitz will receive a further boost: From Saturday, July 19, 2025, a new section of the A72 towards Chemnitz will be opened. This means that the road between the Leipzig-Süd junction and the Zwenkau junction is now open to traffic. However, only two out of three lanes may initially be used, as the final work still needs to take place in the median area MDR reported.
What is particularly pleasing is the full connection of the Zwenkau junction to the A72. This development goes hand in hand with the activation of the official exit from the A72 to the B2 for traffic from the direction of Leipzig. However, there remains a small downer: there could still be restrictions at the Zwenkau junction due to work, so DAY24.
Progress and challenges
The current release is part of larger construction projects on Saxony's highways. The closure of the gap between Rötha and the A38, which has been a long time coming, is expected to be completed by 2026 – a full 20 years later than originally planned. In the meantime, a noise protection concept is being developed that should be completed by 2028 The Saxons reported.
As part of this comprehensive construction work, the federal Autobahn GmbH is planning numerous projects on Saxony's trunk roads this year with a total investment of 157 million euros. Of this, 123 million euros will flow into maintenance measures, while the rest will be earmarked for further construction of the A72. Numerous renovations are planned, particularly on the A4 near Dresden, which is used by up to 120,000 vehicles every day, including the renovation of the Königshainer Berge tunnel.
Roadway renovations and traffic figures
A look at the numbers: Around 50,000 vehicles roll along Saxony's motorways every day, a third of which are trucks. The challenges for the transport infrastructure in this region are enormous. It remains to be seen how the new developments will have a positive impact on traffic flow.
Overall, the release of the new section of the A72 towards Chemnitz brings a breath of fresh air to the transport connection between Leipzig and Chemnitz. The long wait for improvement finally seems to be paying off, although some challenges remain.
