New hope for Long Covid patients: test nicotine patches!
In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic has left its mark around the world that, for many, does not want to end. Around 400 million people are currently suffering from Long COVID, which manifests itself through symptoms such as chronic fatigue, memory problems and shortness of breath. However, there are new hopes in research circles, based primarily on nicotine patches. This is how Dr. med. Marco Leitzke from the Helios Clinic Leisnig has been studying the long-term effects of COVID-19 since 2020 and seems to have found a promising therapeutic approach. He explained that nicotine patches need to be looked at closely as a treatment option for this condition. The results of his studies were published in the “Journal Bioelectronic Medicine” and show encouraging treatment successes.
The intended use of nicotine patches could be important not only for Long COVID, but also for other diseases such as chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). In fact, about 73.5% of the 231 patients surveyed reported significant improvements in their symptoms after using nicotine patches. Nicotine has an affinity for the acetylcholine receptors, which are blocked by the coronavirus spike protein. This means that the use of nicotine patches could be helpful in reversing this blockage and alleviating the symptoms, explains Dr. Leitzke.
Nicotine as a therapeutic approach
Like the controversial but exciting hypothesis of Dr. Leitzke says that coronaviruses disrupt the cholinergic system, which is responsible for many important body functions. The nicotine patches are intended to resolve this disorder and reactivate the receptors. It is easy to use and the effect is tangible. Even if the therapy, according to Dr. Leitzke is considered “not evidence-based”; due to the small and uncontrolled studies, the initial results show promising approaches
For patients suffering from the consequences of COVID-19, nicotine patches are an over-the-counter option that cost between one and three euros per day, depending on the provider. However, in addition to the potential positive effects, side effects such as nausea, sweating or sleep disorders must also be taken into account. These must be carefully considered before use, especially if you have certain pre-existing conditions. Particular caution is required for people under 18 years of age.
Information and exchange
OnAugust 14, 2025An information event will take place in the lecture hall at the Helios Park-Klinikum Leipzig that will deal with the mechanisms, connections and practical application of nicotine patch therapy in Long COVID. This event gives anyone interested the opportunity to find out more about the treatment and the latest findings.
In summary, research into Long COVID and its treatment approaches such as nicotine patch therapy represents an important step. While there is still hope for a causal treatment, comprehensive clinical studies remain necessary to shed light on the long-term effects and the exact mechanism of action of this form of therapy. The current situation requires a lot of patience and an open exchange between those affected and with the researchers in order to overcome the challenges together.
