New police station in Leipzig: Security for Eisenbahnstrasse!

On June 25, 2025, Eisenbahnstrasse in Leipzig received a new police station that is the only weapon ban zone in Saxony. The official opening took place on Wednesday and is primarily intended to create a better feeling of security in this multicultural quarter. The police chief of Leipzig, René Demmler, emphasized that this should not be confused with a conventional police station with 24-hour readiness. Instead, from Monday to Thursday, three officials are available as local police officers who can also accept advertisements. The police station is located in a former vegetable shop at Eisenbahnstrasse 84, corner of Hermann-Liebmann-Straße.

The weapon ban zone, which was set up in November 2018, allows the police to carry out controls regardless of suspicion. In this zone, wearing certain weapons, such as pistols and knives, is prohibited. A study by the University of Leipzig published two years ago apparently showed that the effect of this prohibition zone on general crime was low, but serious conflicts could largely be avoided. The city of Leipzig uses the findings from this investigation to develop a catalog of measures to improve security. In addition to the police presence, many residents also want other prevention measures, especially against drug trafficking and littering.

opening with a colorful program

At the opening of the new police station, an open day was organized. Here the residents had the opportunity to find out more about burglary protection and fraud stitches with a varied children's program as well as information. It turns out that the new police station is planned not only as a security measure, but also as a contact point for the community.

Despite the positive aspects, there was also resistance to the expansion of the police presence. Around 40 people took part in a registered demonstration, which took place without any significant disorders until 5 p.m. Left -wing groups in particular have repeatedly spoken out against the police station, although there has also been vandalism on the building in the past. This shows that public opinions about such safety initiatives are split.

The context of the weapons ban zones

The introduction of weapon ban zones in Germany is in the context of a growing pressure after incidents such as the terrorist attack by Solingen in August 2024. In several cities, such zones have now been set up that ban wearing weapons and enable the police without checking without any reason. Opinions about the effectiveness of these measures are diverse. Experts discuss whether these zones are actually a solution to the increased violent figures or whether they are rather to be regarded as a symbol policy.

Overall, it remains to be seen how the new police station in Eisenbahnstrasse will affect the security situation. With the facility, the city of Leipzig not only pursues an expansion of the police and security infrastructure, but also an attempt to strengthen the feeling of security in the neighborhood through civil police officers. While the police want to continue to evaluate the success of the measures, critics require a more comprehensive approach to the security problem that goes beyond mere prohibition zones.
