New police station in Leipzig: Security for the Eisenbahnstrasse!

On June 25, 2025, Eisenbahnstrasse in Leipzig received a new police station, which is the only weapons ban zone in Saxony. The official opening took place on Wednesday and is primarily intended to create a better feeling of security in this multicultural district. The police chief of Leipzig, René Demmler, emphasized that this should not be confused with a conventional police station with 24-hour availability. Instead, three officers are available on site from Monday to Thursday as citizen police officers who can also accept reports. The police station is located in a former vegetable shop at Eisenbahnstrasse 84, at the corner of Hermann-Liebmann-Strasse.

The weapons ban zone, which was set up in November 2018, allows the police to carry out checks regardless of suspicion. Carrying certain weapons, such as pistols and knives, is prohibited in this zone. A study published two years ago by the University of Leipzig apparently showed that the effect of this prohibited zone on general crime was small, but serious conflicts could largely be avoided. The city of Leipzig is using the findings from this study to develop a catalog of measures to improve safety. In addition, many residents would like to see further preventative measures in addition to the police presence, especially against drug trafficking and littering.

Opening with a colorful program

An open day was organized to mark the ceremonial opening of the new police station. Here, residents had the opportunity to find out about a varied children's program as well as information about burglary protection and fraud schemes. It turns out that the new police station is planned not only as a security measure, but also as a contact point for the community.

Despite the positive aspects, there was also resistance to expanding police presence. Around 40 people took part in a registered demonstration, which took place until 5 p.m. without any significant disruptions. Left-wing groups in particular have repeatedly spoken out against the police station, although the building has also been vandalized in the past. This shows that public opinion is divided regarding such security initiatives.

The context of no-gun zones

The introduction of weapon ban zones in Germany comes in the context of growing pressure after incidents such as the terrorist attack in Solingen in August 2024. In several cities, such zones have now been set up that prohibit the carrying of weapons and allow the police to carry out controls without reason. Opinions about the effectiveness of these measures are diverse. Experts are discussing whether these zones are actually a solution to the increased number of violence or whether they should rather be viewed as symbolic politics.

Overall, it remains to be seen how the new police station on Eisenbahnstrasse will affect the security situation. With this facility, the city of Leipzig is not only pursuing an expansion of the police and security infrastructure, but also an attempt to strengthen the feeling of security in the neighborhood through citizen police. While the police want to continue to evaluate the success of the measures, critics are calling for a more comprehensive approach to the security problem that goes beyond mere prohibition zones.
