New trouble about Ole Werner: Werder and Leipzig in transfer poker!

There is currently an exciting development in the Bundesliga surrounding coach Ole Werner, who is still the focus of both Werder Bremen and RB Leipzig. It was only on Wednesday that it became clear that there was still no agreement between the two clubs regarding the transfer conditions for the change of coach. According to Bild there is a difference in the required transfer amounts: Werder Bremen demands between 4 and 6 million euros, while Leipzig demands a maximum of 2 million euros including bonuses offered.

Both clubs must justify the negotiations to their committees. So the situation is anything but easy. Bremen absolutely wants to avoid giving the impression that Werner was “given away”. At the same time, Leipzig has no interest in appearing “ripped off,” which makes the discussions even more complicated. The need for both sides to find a solution is growing, especially since Leipzig has been looking for a successor to Marco Rose for over eleven weeks.

Update in the negotiations

However, after a brief radio silence since last weekend, negotiations seem to be picking up speed again. According to Kreiszeitung Ole Werner is still the top favorite for the coaching position at RB Leipzig. He has a current contract with Werder Bremen until 2026, but is currently released, which makes negotiations easier. Leipzig's interest in Werner is unbroken and the possibility of a transfer is now within reach.

However, key points still need to be clarified. Werder Bremen originally demanded a transfer fee of up to six million euros, which Leipzig considers excessive. Her pain threshold was initially around three million euros. Both clubs have already adapted and there is discussion about including a profit-sharing model in the discussions. This means that an additional payment would be made to Werder if Werner is successful at the new club.

The financial dimension

One aspect that also plays a role in the negotiations is the financial relief for Werder. By saying goodbye to Werner and his assistant coaches Patrick Kohlmann and Thomas Cichon early, the club could save around 2 million euros by the time their contracts expire in June 2026. This is certainly an argument that makes Werder strong in the discussions. For RB Leipzig, as the only Bundesliga club without a coach for the 2025/26 season, time is of the essence and they have to find a solution quickly.

In summary, it remains to be said that the talks between Werder Bremen and RB Leipzig contain both complications and potential. The outcome remains to be seen, but everyone involved must now pull together to find a path that is acceptable to both sides.
