New logistics center at Leipzig Airport: Realterm invests!

A new chapter is opening at Leipzig/Halle Airport after Amazon closed its doors. Realterm, a US company, has taken over the site and plans to build a state-of-the-art air freight facility with an impressive 45,000 square meters of warehouse space. This new structure will be connected directly to the tarmac so that freight movements between planes and trucks can run more quickly in the future. Lynn Kau, Senior Vice President Corporate Development at Realterm, sees great growth potential in this project and speaks of a “forward-looking development” for the location. Thuringia24 reports about the fact that Frank Pieper from Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG praises the ideal conditions at the location for air freight companies.

Leipzig/Halle Airport has established itself as an important player in the air freight business in recent years. It is not only one of the most important cargo airports in Germany, but also positions itself internationally. With an annual cargo volume of over one million tons, the airport is the springboard to growth markets in Eastern Europe, Asia and North America. This dynamic is also explained by the excellent location in the middle of Europe, which ensures optimal connections to the national and international transport network. According to Statista, Leipzig/Halle Airport will be the second largest in Germany in 2023, behind Frankfurt and ahead of locations such as Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf. Statista provides interesting insights into the development of freight volumes in Germany.

Economic prospects and logistics hub

With the settlement in the new Aircargo Business Park, which is directly assigned to Leipzig/Halle Airport, the region will be further developed as a logistics and business location. The cities of Leipzig and Halle/Saale have already established themselves as centers for well-known companies such as DHL, Porsche, BMW and Bayer. This region not only offers excellent infrastructure, but also a highly qualified workforce and a large supply of space for further investments. The many years of experience of companies such as Ceva Logistics and DB Schenker Logistics are helping to ensure that the region is increasingly becoming a hub for international goods traffic. AirCargo Business Park highlights the best conditions for companies that rely on the air freight sector.

Now it remains to be seen what other plans and projects will be realized with the new logistics center on the former Amazon site. One thing is certain: the developments at Leipzig/Halle Airport are a sign that the region can continue to expect strong growth and innovative projects in the future. The focus on freight and logistics will not only boost the local economy, but strengthen the entire regional network and create new jobs.
