New logistics center at Leipzig Airport: Realterm invests in the future!

Something exciting is happening again at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Germany's second largest cargo airport, known for its logistical importance, is facing a new chapter. How thuringia24 reports, Realterm, an experienced US company, has acquired the former Amazon site and is planning to build a modern air freight facility there.

Together with Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ), a facility will be created with up to 45,000 square meters of storage space. It will address the specific needs of express and e-commerce operations and will also be designed for general freight operations. Frank Pieper from Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG highlights the ideal conditions at the location, which are advantageous for both national and international freight companies.

Modern infrastructure for efficient processes

The newly planned facility will be directly connected to the tarmac, which will significantly speed up freight movements between aircraft and trucks. Thanks to direct access to the airside and unhindered connections to important motorway connections, transfer times can be reduced to a minimum. This efficiency should help to further consolidate Leipzig/Halle as a preferred location for freight transport.

In 2024, the airport already recorded around 1.4 million tonnes of cargo processed, establishing itself as a significant player in the air cargo sector. The continuous improvements in infrastructure and service offerings, including modern customs services and qualified local workforce, make it increasingly attractive for companies in the logistics sector.

Realterm’s experience and vision

Realterm brings with it impressive experience of over 30 years in the development of air cargo systems. Their portfolio includes over 17 million square feet of usable space in 34 airports worldwide - a testament to their expertise. Projects such as the JFK Modern Air Cargo Facility in New York and the Northeast Cargo Campus at Chicago O’Hare International Airport are just a few examples of their innovative approach. Lynn Kau, Senior Vice President Corporate Development at Realterm, emphasizes that the growth potential of this new facility is enormous.

How Realterm notes, the multimodal connection to the A9 and A14 motorways as well as to a train station network ensures a seamless connection. This is another reason why the airport and the region are very popular as a logistics location.

Additionally points Necklaces points out that the demand for logistics space and real estate in Germany is increasing sharply. This trend is evident across the industry as more and more companies invest in modern logistics solutions.

With these developments at the airport of the century, it is clear: Leipzig/Halle will continue to play a central role in air freight traffic in the future and establish itself as an important transshipment point for freight companies.
