New air freight center at Leipzig Airport: REALERM takes over!

At the Leipzig/Halle Airport, a lot is happening - after the Omanazon has left, a new chapter is opened. The second largest cargo airport in Germany, known for its ideal conditions for the air freight industry, becomes the location of a state-of-the-art logistics center. The US company REALTERM has taken over the former Amazon site and plans to build an air freight facility with impressive 45,000 square meters of storage space. Tied directly to the roller field, freight movements between the aircraft and truck should now take place even more quickly.

REALTERMS Senior Vice President Corporate Development, Lynn Kau, sees enormous growth potential in this project. That doesn't just talk about Leipzig. Frank Pieper from Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG emphasizes the perfect conditions for air freight companies at the location. This development could turn out to be a true game channel for the airport.

new construction projects are stagnating, but it continues

Even if the first construction phase of the air freight center was completed in 2014, the focus remains. Dietz AG and Leipzig/Halle Airport recently given the promise to build the new center in the south of the airport. The project will be realized with investments of a proud 40 million euros. After completing the first construction phase, which includes 23,000 square meters, another expansion with an additional 15,000 square meters is planned to be completed by the end of 2018.

A new hangar and apron areas for up to six large -scale aircraft are created for the north area of the airport. It remains exciting to see how these developments will further increase the competitiveness of the airport.

The competition in German freight traffic

Leipzig/Halle is not without reason - according to an analysis by Statista, it is one of the five largest freight airports in Germany. This survey took a close look at the air freight volume in tons between 2019 and 2024 and represented the favorites graphically. The last update of this data took place on July 6, 2025 and impressively shows how dynamically the freight traffic in Germany is growing.

The combination of excellent location factors, constant investments and the development of new logistical options could continue to keep Leipzig/Halle Airport at home and abroad. The coming months will surely have many interesting developments. It is already a firm state size in German air traffic!
