New air freight center at Leipzig Airport: Realterm takes over!
A lot is happening at Leipzig/Halle Airport - a new chapter is beginning after Amazon's exit. Germany's second largest cargo airport, known for its ideal conditions for the air freight industry, will become the location of a state-of-the-art logistics center. The US company Realterm has taken over the former Amazon site and plans to build an air freight facility there with an impressive 45,000 square meters of storage space. Directly connected to the runway, freight movements between planes and trucks should now be even quicker.
Realterms Senior Vice President Corporate Development, Lynn Kau, sees enormous growth potential in this project. Word of this isn't just getting around in Leipzig. Frank Pieper from Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG highlights the perfect conditions for air freight companies at the location. This development could prove to be a real game-changer for the airport.
New construction projects are stagnating, but things continue
Even though the first construction phase of the air cargo center was completed in 2014, the focus remains on expansion. Dietz AG and Leipzig/Halle Airport recently agreed to build the new center in the south of the airport. The project will be realized with investments totaling an impressive 40 million euros. After completion of the first construction phase, which covers 23,000 square meters, a further expansion with an additional 15,000 square meters is planned, which should be completed by the end of 2018.
A new hangar and apron areas for up to six wide-body aircraft will be created for the northern area of the airport. It remains exciting to see how these developments will further increase the airport's competitiveness.
The competition in German freight transport
It's not without reason that Leipzig/Halle is being talked about - according to an analysis by Statista, it is one of the five largest cargo airports in Germany. This survey took a close look at the air freight volumes in tons between 2019 and 2024 and graphically presented the favorites. The last update of this data took place on July 6, 2025 and impressively shows how dynamically freight traffic is growing in Germany.
The combination of excellent location factors, constant investments and the development of new logistical possibilities could keep Leipzig/Halle Airport highly popular at home and abroad. The coming months will certainly bring many interesting developments. He is already a major player in German air traffic!
