New terrarium at Leipzig Zoo: huge opening on September 27th!
There is reason to be happy in Leipzig: the new terrarium at Leipzig Zoo will be ceremoniously opened on September 27, 2025. After an intensive construction period of four years, visitors can finally experience the historic ensemble of aquarium and terrarium in all its splendor again. There is a lot to discover and learn here for both children and adults.
The newly designed terrarium offers space for a variety of reptiles and aquatic creatures. There is anticipation because the European pond turtles and Greek tortoises have already moved into their new enclosures. In addition to these treasures, a landscape sheep pool for the endangered stump crocodiles is also presented as a real highlight. This promises exciting insights into the world of reptiles and alligators.
The living environment visited
In addition to the turtles, the new terrarium will also feature Mississippi alligators, Ally and Gator, the alligators that live at the zoo, and stump crocodiles. Visitors can look forward to exciting live feedings and encounters with many other reptiles, including various snakes. This is all part of a well thought-out concept to make Leipzig Zoo even more attractive and worth living in.
The construction work was sometimes challenging and was delayed due to the dilapidated building structure and difficulties in procuring steel. Nevertheless, it was possible to recreate the historic glass ceiling of the terrarium true to the original and at the same time pay attention to energy efficiency. Leipzig Zoo has thus taken another important step in its master plan to become the zoo of the future.
A part of a larger vision
The Leipzig Zoo, founded on June 9, 1878 by Ernst Pinkert, now impresses with over 4,000 animals of around 850 species. In addition to the fascinating terrarium, there are numerous other attractions such as the penguin coast with African penguins and the 100-year-old aquarium, which presents fish and aquatic creatures from all over the world. The Kiwara savannah and the Gondwanaland tropical adventure world are just a few examples of the different themed worlds the zoo has to offer.
The coming years will also bring exciting developments, including the opening of new areas such as Tierra del Fuego in 2026 and Asian Islands in 2028. Leipzig Zoo will not only remain a place to meet wildlife, but also a living project that is constantly growing and developing.
The new terrarium not only promises exciting insights into the world of reptiles, but is also an excellent destination for a family trip. Anyone who wants to discover the fascinating world of animals has come to the right place - and you can look forward to the experiences that the coming months will bring at Leipzig Zoo.
