Saxon breweries on strike: the wage wall should finally come down!

On Thursday, August 14, 2025, around 300 employees of Saxon breweries took to the streets to demonstrate for better working conditions at Leipzig Central Station. The demonstration took place as part of collective bargaining between the Food, Pleasure and Restaurants union (NGG) and the Radeberger Group. This is the largest brewing group in Germany and belongs to the Oetker Group. The NGG had called for a strike in five breweries: Sternburg Brewery Leipzig, Krostitzer Brewery, Radeberger Brewery, Freiberger Brewery and Wernesgrüner Brewery. During the protests, employees demanded a wage increase of seven percent and 100 euros more for trainees.

Uwe Ledwig, negotiator for NGG Ost, criticized the existing wage gap between East and West. According to his information, employees in Saxony earn an average of 4,000 euros less per year than their colleagues in West Germany. Banners at the demonstration called for “tearing down the wage wall”. The employers cite historical reasons for these differences, which Ledwig had to describe as nonsensical. The first demonstration of this kind also has its purpose: Since the strikes began, over 50 shifts have already been canceled, which means that more than 50 million bottles of beer and therefore around 250,000 hectoliters of beer have not been filled.
