Complete closure of Karl-Liebknecht-Straße: construction work starts now!
In Leipzig, construction work on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße is just around the corner, and that will bring with it some changes for residents and road users. From Friday, June 28, 2023, the road will be completely closed for several months. The city is investing around six million euros in these measures, which not only include the construction of new tram tracks and overhead lines, but also the renovation of gas, water and district heating pipes as well as the renewal of cycle paths and roadways. MDR reports that the first preparatory work began in mid-May.
Construction work was originally scheduled to start at the end of May, but due to unforeseen circumstances it was postponed to the end of June. Residents have to be prepared for certain restrictions, especially when it comes to drinking water supplies. This can be impaired for hours. The most important thing, however, remains that access to residential buildings is still guaranteed, as the Leipziger Internet Zeitung emphasizes.
Major traffic changes
Tram traffic on lines 10 and 11 will be significantly restricted during the closure. A rail replacement service (SEV) with buses will be set up, which will run from Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz to Südplatz. It's getting exciting because the bus lines that normally serve Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, such as lines 60, 74 and N60, have to be rerouted from the end of June to the beginning of August. Night bus routes 9 and 10 are also affected, but building entrances and shops remain within walking distance. Leipziger Internet Zeitung reports that the diversions and changes to the stops will be announced in order to provide residents and passengers with the best possible information.
The work consists of replacing 550 meters of tracks and must be completed by the end of September 2025. In total, the waterworks are tasked with replacing 430 meters of drinking water pipes and renovating 164 meters of sewers. The municipal utilities will also lay a new low-pressure gas pipeline and a medium-voltage cable system on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße.
Leipzig's mobility strategy
These extensive construction measures are part of a larger mobility strategy that the city of Leipzig is pursuing. The Blick emphasizes that Leipzig, as an important commercial center, has a historical building tradition and strong economic growth. The city is known not only for its cultural diversity, but also for its historical buildings and a vibrant economic life. Projects of this kind are crucial to sustainably improve the transport infrastructure and increase the quality of life of citizens.
Overall, it remains to be seen how the construction activities and the associated restrictions will affect residents and traffic in Leipzig. But one thing is certain: the modernization of Karl-Liebknecht-Straße will have a decisive impact on the cityscape and mobility in the future.
