Complete closure in Leipzig: Handelstrasse becomes impassable due to construction work!
Important information for everyone traveling in Leipzig: Major construction work is imminent on Handelstrasse in the south-east of Leipzig. The city has decided to extend existing construction work to resurface the road in the coming weeks. How LVZ reported, the construction site will be set up between the August Bebel settlement in Holzhausen and Holzhausener Straße in Liebertwolkwitz. The work is necessary to replace the drinking water pipe through the Leipzig waterworks.
The costs of these construction measures amount to around 200,000 euros and are expected to last until August 22, 2025. The road will be completely closed during the entire time. However, pedestrians and cyclists can still use Handel Street, which is good news for all users of the route. Cyclists and pedestrians are not affected by the restrictions, but will certainly be happy about the upcoming infrastructure improvements.
Detours and closures
Bus route 172 will be rerouted during construction work and the Walter-Heise-Straße and Colmbergsiedlung stops will not be served. This fact obviously causes some inconvenience for commuters. But the same applies here: those who are patient will soon benefit from the improvements.
Innovations in the Löwitz district
In addition to the construction site on Handelstrasse, there is also another construction site at the main train station that has been running since April 1, 2025. The connection between the Löwitz district and the road network will be improved here. The aim of these measures is to integrate a new road connection to the intersection between Berliner and Roscher Straße Day24 reported. This new connection is referred to as an extension of the Prussian side. A bridge over the Parthe is also being completed.
The complete closure of the intersection between Berliner and Roscher Straße to cars will last until mid-July 2025. The planned infrastructure includes sidewalks on both sides, two bicycle lanes, three lanes and new street lighting. Cyclists and pedestrians will be guided through the construction site, and safety will be ensured by a fixed traffic light instead of the current temporary solution.
To summarize all of these construction sites, there are definitely exciting but also challenging times ahead. While the urgently needed work progresses and improves the infrastructure, residents and commuters can exercise a little patience.
