Wolves conquer Saxony: New pairs and exciting reports of offspring!
There is fresh news for all nature and animal lovers in Saxony: The wolves continue to expand and have formed two new pairs of wolves. These exciting developments were made by Radio Leipzig reported. The new territories are located in Tresenwald and Lossatal, both in the Leipzig district. In addition, another wolf territory was confirmed in the Muldenhammer region (Vogtlandkreis).
A total of six wolf pairs and 35 wolf packs currently live in Saxony. This shows the positive growth of the wolf population in the Free State. However, the main population of wolves remains in Lusatia, where 28 confirmed territories as well as 27 packs and a single pair can be counted. Monitoring of wolves in Saxony has been ongoing since 2001 and is based on genetic samples and camera trap recordings. Preliminary wolf monitoring figures for the 2024/25 season confirm these figures, which should be finally published by autumn 2025 n-tv reported.
Offspring and interesting finds
The birth of puppies in Liebschützberg and Marienberg is particularly pleasing, where a pack was formed in both cases. A helpless wolf pup was spotted in the Lossa Valley, whose parents could not initially be identified. This pup was eventually released and observed in the wild, where its parents and two other puppies were filmed. This is great news for the poaching projects in Saxony that are working to protect these animals.
In total there are 41 confirmed wolf territories in Saxony. What will happen next in the region remains to be seen, as the data evaluation has not yet been completed for seven other areas, including Cunewalde and Gray Heron Lake. DBB Wolf emphasizes that the evaluation of wolf territories is carried out annually by the federal states and that the results are compiled in September, which ensures continuous monitoring of wolf populations.
Current challenges
While the large number of wolf packs and pairs promotes positive impulses, there are also dark sides. The Colditzer Forst wolf territory in the southeast of Leipzig has now finally disappeared. In addition, the status in the Moritzburg and Gohrischheide regions remains unclear for the time being. Such developments show that the wolves' habitat is not only characterized by growth, but also by challenges that need to be overcome.
Overall, the situation of wolves in Saxony shows a dynamic trend that causes both joy and concern. A good hand is needed to continue to offer these fascinating animals a safe habitat and at the same time protect them in harmony with the population.
