Leipzig Zoo: Gondwanaland inspires despite construction problems and criticism!
An exciting change is currently taking place at Leipzig Zoo. The zoo is considered one of the most modern in Europe and has already attracted a lot of attention with projects such as the tropical Gondwanaland adventure world. Zoo director Jörg Junhold, who has led the zoo for an impressive 25 years, shares in his podcast “Elephant, Tiger & Co.” Insights into the diverse challenges of building this unique area. Despite various obstacles, including problems with the shell builder and the far-reaching steel crisis of 2008, Gondwanaland was finally completed at a total cost of around 68 million euros and is enjoying great popularity. The city of Leipzig contributed around 15 million euros, while grants and donations financed the rest. However, it should be noted that these developments were controversial within city politics, which also attracted a lot of media attention. Junhold and the mayor of Leipzig had to make some tricky decisions, but there was no public exchange.
But that's not all that happens at the zoo. Work is currently underway on a fascinating water world called “Tierra del Fuego”, which is expected to attract visitors by 2026. This facility will feature a walk-through underwater landscape that will allow guests to experience the animals up close. It is said to be home to California sea lions, Humboldt penguins and various seabirds on one hectare of land. A 140-meter-long underwater tunnel with a breathtaking 360-degree view is also one of the highlights. Construction is progressing quickly, with the shell construction scheduled to be completed by summer 2025. It is planned that the open-air grandstand will be used for feeding and a wave system will complement the water attractions. Zoo director Junhold emphasized that in all of these developments, the focus is on creating natural habitats for the animals.
Planned innovations in Leipzig's zoo
However, the “Tierra del Fuego” project is not the only construction site currently underway at Leipzig Zoo. A total of three new major projects will be completed by the zoo's 150th anniversary in 2028. This also includes the expansion of the “Asian Island Worlds”, which has been under construction since 2022 and is intended to delight visitors with a piece of Vietnam. Macaws will soon fly freely around guests and a renovated terrarium, which is connected to the aquarium and includes alligators and other animal residents, will soon be opened. It is therefore not surprising that expectations are rising among both zoo directors and visitors.
The numbers speak for themselves: Over 650 animal species and more than 1,600 animals are already at home in Leipzig Zoo, making the trip a real experience. The zoo remains in continuous development, with exciting new additions that will offer visitors exciting insights into the animal world for years to come. So it remains to be seen how the Leipzig Zoo program will unfold in the coming years.
