Leipzig Zoo: Gondwanaland celebrates opening! A masterpiece of animal architecture
Leipzig Zoo is one of the most modern zoos in Europe and impresses with impressive facilities such as Pongoland, the Kiwara savannah and the elephant temple. Particularly noteworthy is the tropical adventure world of Gondwanaland, which had to overcome a variety of challenges under the leadership of zoo director Jörg Junhold, who has been running the zoo for 25 years. Junhold describes his time at the zoo as very fulfilling, even though difficulties with the shell builder and the global steel crisis in 2008 put a strain on the Gondwanaland project. An individual decision by the mayor of Leipzig during the summer break led to criticism, but the total costs of around 68 million euros, of which the city covered around 15 million euros, were ultimately covered by grants, donations and loans. Despite the adversity, Gondwanaland has steadily increased visitor numbers, showing that the effort has been rewarded. The article from Thüringen24 can be found here: Thuringia24 reports.
But that's not all! A new project is currently being built at Leipzig Zoo: the Tierra del Fuego facility, which is scheduled to be completed by 2025. This impressive aquatic world will feature a variety of new attractions, including a walk-through underwater tunnel, giving zoo visitors an unforgettable diving experience. The shell construction is progressing quickly and is scheduled to be completed in summer 2025. Zoo visitors can already observe the progress of the construction of the artificial rocks and technical buildings from the podium. The project, which costs a total of 30 million euros, will also be home to California sea lions and various species of penguins. The decision to finance this facility was made by the Leipzig council meeting. Zoo director Prof. Jörg Junhold emphasizes that the natural design of the habitats benefits both the animals and the visitors. The trend towards natural habitats
Today, zoo architecture is an area that receives great attention because it enables the creation of species-typical habitats for animals. The concepts take into account not only the keeping conditions, but also the behavior of the animals and the needs of the visitors. Numerous architects and biologists work together to create the best conditions for designing the enclosures. Historically, the architecture of zoo animals has evolved significantly. From the colonial style to the creation of experiences and natural design – architecture must constantly adapt to the findings of animal behavior research. Aspects such as freedom of movement and atmosphere for visitors are becoming increasingly important. The elephant park in the Cologne Zoological Garden and the penguin tank in the London Zoo are examples of important developments in zoo architecture.
