Red alert: bird flu causes ban on all poultry markets!

There is currently alarming news from the bird world in the North Saxony district. How MDR reported, the bird flu virus was detected in two wild birds found dead in Torgau and Mörtitz. This discovery prompted immediate action to prevent the possible spread of the disease.

The district office announced on Tuesday that there is currently no requirement to keep poultry in stables. However, poultry farmers are advised to keep their animals in the stables as a precaution. The epidemic is classified as dynamic and worrying, which has led the authorities to ban all poultry markets and bird exchanges in the Leipzig district until further notice.

Risk and measures

The decision to ban the mobile poultry trade by general decree follows the Friedrich Loeffler Institute's assessment that the risk of the virus spreading through poultry shows is considered high. Therefore, the ban on poultry shows is considered necessary to prevent the virus from spreading further.

The affected poultry farmers are now required to be particularly attentive and follow the instructions of the health authorities. “There’s something going on,” you could say, because the situation requires quick action and caution to protect domestic stocks.

A look into the regional poultry industry

The poultry industry is of central importance to many businesses in the region. The sudden stop of the markets has hit farmers and traders hard, who rely on the monthly bird fairs to sell their animals. Until now, the majority of breeders were deprived of a good hand in selecting healthy animals, but this is even more true now.

Creativity is now required: initiatives to connect breeders and buyers online could be a solution. While stores have to remain closed, the virtual market could take hold to cushion some of the economic damage.

The coming weeks will be crucial to better assess the situation and take the right steps to combat bird flu. Stay informed and protect your animals – together we can overcome this challenge!
