Alcohol accidents in Großenhain: Two drivers in danger!
On Saturday evening, August 25, 2025, there were two dramatic accidents in the tranquil Großenhain that were caused by the influence of alcohol. On Zschieschener Weg, a 53-year-old drove his Mercedes C-Class off the road and crashed into a tree. Police report that the man was seriously injured and the extent of the damage is currently being determined. His alcohol level was around 1.4 per mille, which not only led to a blood test, but also to his driver's license being taken away. Proceedings were initiated against the driver for endangering road traffic. This illustrates how serious the effects of drinking and driving can be, because according to Section 24a of the Road Traffic Act, you are considered unfit to drive if you have a blood alcohol level of just 0.5 per mille.
A short time later, another incident occurred in which a 62-year-old woman on a bicycle collided with a parked Ford Transit. Fortunately, the woman was uninjured; However, there was damage of around 1,000 euros. Her alcohol level was around 1.3 per mille, which also led to a blood sample and a lawsuit for endangering traffic. Such incidents demonstrate the risks that both drivers and cyclists take when alcohol comes into play; Even small amounts can significantly impair perception and the ability to react, warns the German Road Safety Council portal.
The problem of drunk driving in Germany
The accidents mentioned above fit into a worrying trend: In Germany, a total of 260 people died in alcohol-related traffic accidents in 2014. Although the number of accidents has been decreasing for over 20 years, alcohol remains one of the most common causes of serious traffic accidents. Young men between the ages of 18 and 34 are particularly affected. In all of 2014, almost 40% of the 13,742 alcohol-related traffic accidents were linked to this group, as pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov documented.
The numbers are alarming: According to the German Road Safety Council, one in 16 traffic deaths can be attributed to an alcohol-related accident. The risk increases, especially on weekends, especially at night. Between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., 24.4% of all accidents were alcohol-related. Statistically speaking, they are – like that alcohol.dvr.de – Danger increases from 0.3 per mille; at 1.1 per mille there is a 10-fold increase in the risk of accidents.
Prevention measures and education
In order to minimize these dangers, not only controls but also educational work are of utmost importance. The federal government is working with various organizations to improve road safety and is implementing measures such as “Vision Zero” to ensure that there are no serious accidents and deaths on the roads. Nevertheless, surveys show that although a large proportion of the population is aware of the dangers of alcohol consumption, 31% said they had driven under the influence of alcohol at least once in the past year.
It remains a challenge for society as a whole to question the acceptance of drunk driving and to raise awareness of the risks. Drinking and driving is often viewed as a trivial offense, even though the dangers are real and have tragic consequences every day.
