Arson attack on Buntes Meißen: Police are investigating right-wing extremists!
A suspected arson attack was carried out in Meißen on the night of Sunday to Monday. A hedge was set on fire on the grounds of the Buntes Meißen e.V. association, which promotes shared gardening by people of different nationalities. During the extinguishing work, the emergency services found xenophobic graffiti on a poster and a lamp post near the scene of the fire. The property damage caused by the fire amounts to around 1000 euros. A 43-year-old German was identified as a possible author of the hate messages, but it is currently unclear whether he also set the fire. The police have started an investigation and believe there is a political motive day24 reported.
Valentin Lippmann, spokesman for right-wing extremism for the ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS parliamentary group in the Saxon state parliament, has declared his solidarity with Buntes Meißen e.V. and emphasized that such attacks are aimed at intimidating the association's activists. Lippmann calls for the Interior Ministry and the police to step up their efforts to protect democratic civil society. “There is no place for racism and contempt for humanity in Meißen,” emphasizes Bernd Oehler, the chairman of the association, and condemns the inhumane attacks of the past few months, as well as those Green parliamentary group in Saxony reported.
Increased willingness to use violence in the right-wing extremist spectrum
The problem is exacerbated by the constantly increasing number of right-wing extremist crimes in Germany. According to estimates by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, there are around 32,000 right-wing extremist people in Germany, 13,000 of whom are considered to be violent. Hostility and attacks on political opponents are increasing, which is also reflected in cases in which mayors have already resigned from their positions out of fear for their safety. With a large number of right-wing extremist acts of violence, right-wing extremism is considered the greatest threat to security in Germany. Especially after the terrible events in Hanau, where Tobias R. shot nine people, the danger of this extremist attitude is becoming increasingly clear bpb reported.
Overall, it remains to be noted that the Buntes Meißen e.V. association has not only suffered material damage, but that the values of an open and tolerant society are also being attacked. The incidents show that the fight against right-wing extremism and intolerance continues to become more explosive and it is essential that civil society stands together to counteract such developments.
